I was looking at the Reel Stream Hydra system. http://www.reel-stream.com/ It says 14 bit linear color, and something doesnt add up:

On a digital sensor, I was under the impression that dynamic range must be less than bit depth, but that high bit depth is waisted unless the dynamic range is close behind it. IE, you cant 'fit' 11 stops in 10 bits, you need 12 bits, you can't fit 9 stops in 8 bits, you need 10 bits.

Why does the hydra have 14 bits, unless it has at least 12 stops DR? (Which I'm sure it doesn't. Cool though it may be, 12 stops it ain't)

Sure, you can have the A-to-D sample at a precision that's much greater than the inherent DR of the sensor. There's nothing "wrong" with this, but you can get to the point where you're wasting bits. Effectively, you're more accurately sampling noise.
