I know that Red has said that they are going to produce other cameras other than the Red One. I was wondering whether they were planning on breaking into ALL the markets, or just staying in the professional realm. Granted, The RedONE is as highly priced as other "professional cameras" (i.e. most 35 MM and most 'professional grade' HD systems) but its still considered the professional market as its a professional camera, regardless of price.

Are you guys thinking of breaking into the other markets, like consumer and prosumer at all? For example, do you think that in the future we would see Red cameras that would be in the price range of lets say the College film maker, the high school film maker and the "i like making movies for my kids birthday" film maker? I believe that Red would literally DROWN Canon, Sony and Panasonic if they introduced their own lines of prosumer cameras. For example, their professional line starts with the red ONE. This would mean that their most expensive professional system would be what...$40,000 at the MOST if you literally bought every single last accessory? So they could have professional line at 20-40,000 dollars, a semi-professional at 10-20, a prosumer line at 5-10 and a consumer line at 1-5 thousand. What does everyone think of this possibility?

I really believe that red could totally revolutionize the way EVERYONE makes movies if they not only had the lower pricd high quality grade cameras for the pros, but also the lower priced cameras for student film makers and others as well. It would literally blow the Panasonic HVX-200, and all the other prosumer cameras right out of the water.

They've announced a professional pocket camera. What that means and when it shows up remain to be seen.

I know about the professional pocket camera. What I meant was if they were planning on doing specific lines, like a prosumer and consumer line along with their professional line.

The trouble is they can't make a prosumer camera that's too good or too cheap without cannibalizing the Red One market. Although it seems to me like there's a sweet spot around $2000 that's not being filled. A camera that is cheaper and better than an HVX (raw capability, 35mm sensor, no included lens) but much more professional and rugged than an HV20 would sell like hotcakes.

I can't imagine they have any interest in competing in the consumer market at all. I would love to see a truly accessible indie camera though.

Hey kmikami,

You got my vote on that. Not that it would make RED go under if it turned out to be a bust, but why bother. One of the things that led to the demise of Cinema Products was a group of new investors who bought the company and wasted a mil and a half developing and building the steadicam JR. This was the supposed end all unit for hand holding consumer camcorders, except right about the time it came to be all those little camcorders came out with LCD screens making it possible to walk around with the camera with out tripping over ones own feet. This enginerring marvel was at the expense of two new 35mm cine cameras in the prototype stage, not to mention my job as senior prototype technician. lol

No.

At least I doubt it. They're a digital cinema company, which kind of implies that they're strictly professional.

I think that the closest they will come to prosumer is the Pocket cam.
