OK - simple question - and hopefully one that can be answered...
When is the Matte-box going to be available...?
It's clear now that You are past the "thinking" stage on this issue, but I see no reason why the MB should wait for Scarlet and/or Epic... Red Ones are being sold as we speak (I've just placed an order for 5451) and we need MB's too... I am about to plunge $5K on ARRI MB - but if I knew the RED MB could be out before Christmas - I will wait...
Am I asking too much? I apologize if I do...

Before Christmas? Of what year? If you've followed Red policy at all, I think it's clear that they don't actually ship anything until months after the products have been announced with complete specs, pricing, and 3D renders.
On another note, I think I would use caution before jumping into Red accessories. The quality of Red's accessories have been fairly hit and miss, hence the popularity of products from Redrock Micro, Element Technica, Zacuto, and Allstar.

Folks have been saying that the Redrock Mattebox is good. Mine should be here on Friday.
I will post what I know after that but I think you can search threads for this item.

didn't they cancel the matte box they were going to make because there were cheaper better options available already

That's what I read. They do not intend to do the matte box at this time.

I'm really happy with my Redrock Mattbox. Its well made and reasonably sturdy for a really good price.

Folks may be confused since a couple of the DSMC renders included a RED-branded mattebox.

There is no confusion... RED is very careful what kind of renders they spit out (with the only exception of the "pinky" maybe) and the RED matte-box is there for reason. I would not be surprised if some of the accessories start appearing fairly soon. Unlike camera brains - these are far too easy to "copy"...
But maybe that is just me...
PS: I have looked closely at the RedRock MB and opt to go with the ARRI instead. I have my own reservations about its quality...

Red Mattebox project has been cancelled a looong time ago. Read the "delivery dates" post... Don't wait for christmas, buy another brand. I heard Redrock was great and cheap.

That was before the 13th... Something is telling me it is very much resurrected...

On the note of the RRMB, I had one of the first ones and loved, absolutely no better MB is out there for the price, so again as I said before "Fantastic job BRIAN", however for the high end commercial jobs and feature film projects that both Peter and I will be involved here at KETCHFRAME STUDIOS, we need the best of the best, and for now such a solution it is only offered by ARRI, yet it is natural that seen the recent RED renderings featuring the MB, ones can assume that RED is in deed resuscitating the MB program, and that would be a great news.
Gear will be purchased accordingly and as needed no matter what, so what it will be available at the time of need it is what will be purchased, no question!!
However I'm with Peter 100% ion saying that we both prefer with till the very last minute before buying something from a different manufacturer that RED will come out with, way better and much less expensive, and for me there is nothing sexier and better way to get a system as complete as possible utilizing the same manufacturer's products.

I really cannot see ARRI making any room for competition in this field. They've got it nailed to perfection and the MMB-1 is great and affordable. Why waste R&D in this area? Yes, the RED MB looks cool but once again ARRI has got down pat.

I agree fully that ARRI has done an incredible design (again) with their latest MB, but pricing even so good is still a bit high for many, and if RED was to make their RED MB, they would still sale thousand's, so I'll say there is plenty room for getting something very good even better, and at a better price as well, after all RED, especially with SCARLET its what is all about!!

I have had the opportunity to use both Arri and RedRock matteboxes in the past as an AC on RED productions, and were I to make a recommendation, I would suggest the Arri. To my hands, the Arri feels stronger and less prone to wobble. Yes, the swing-away design of the RedRock is very nice and makes it simple to change lenses or donuts, but it can hang very crooked if it's even slightly warped.
I also don't particularly care for the design of the filter holders. The spring-loaded clip holding the filter in is very, very difficult to manipulate if your hands are even slightly sweaty (especially without fingernails!). The Arri pin design is much easier to grab and can be done one-handed, unlike the RedRock.
And both of them rock on a RED. :)

They had canceled the Red Mattebox for the Red One. Big Jon, however, let the ScarletUsers know that they were still developing the Scarlet's Mattebox, as that was a different camera.
NOW, though, things have changed completly. I wouldn't be surprised to see Red come out with a "modular" mattebox that you can use with either your Scarlet or your Epic.

Depends on when Red announces the Red Matteboxes.

I looked around but couldn't find where he had said this... can you point me to it?
Thanks!

This what you were looking for?
The decision to not move forward on a matte box was specific to the RED One. We've got all kinds of amazing, bad, cool stuff planned for Scarlet! Woo-Hoo!

the Arri feels stronger
Does the Redrock break easily? What material is it made of?
What particular force has a mattebox normally going to resist?
And what about weight?

The Redrock MB is great and I haven't had any problems with mine. If you want to pay a couple extra grand for a MB20 then by all means get one. The Arri mattebox is really nice but it isn't nice enough to pay an extra $3K for.

The filter trays in the RR matte box are it's weakness. Their spring clamps are pretty crappy.

Id second this. The Redrock is very good for the money and we are quite happy with it. Even the Vocas MB450 which would be another favoured alternative the additional cost just doesnt seem to stack up.
Id like to see 5.65 x 5.65 trays though and vertical 4 x 5.65 tray for the RR.

I have to also recommend the RedRockMicro MB, it's solid and a bargain. I own one. If you don't have a problem spending a few extra thousand go with the Arri, I use them often too but the build/quality difference between the two isn't proportional to the $$$. If I had to put a number on it I'd say the Arri is maybe 20% better.

What's great about the ARRI is it's a third handle. You can operate from it.
You can also drop it, beat it up, take it to hell and back.
IT IS SOLID. You get what you pay for.

Jim cancelled the RED Mattebox when he felt enough choices had entered the market for good enough prices. He no longer felt there was a need for RED to build a mattebox.
I agree with this line of thinking.

Another benefit with the Arri is being able to angle the filters to reduce inter-filter reflections. You can also do it with the RedRock but by "cheating it".
