The distinction between a "hobbyist" and an "indie filmmaker" is blurry :)
Frankly, I have great affection for people who admit they're hobbyists. If they want to give money to Red, great! We should welcome them with open arms. Let's face it, someone filming their cat, yacht or palace in 4k is pretty harmless and kinda sweet. And they'll probably be okay with hiring some pros to teach them. Much better than "indie directors" who expect you to help them for free.

Yes. But to be a RED hobbyist is quite different IMHO.

Considering what a lot of people spend on their hobbies, RED One is definitely priced within that realm. I have plenty of hobby uses planned for my RED kit -- like making short films, maybe a feature and just plain screwing around. My RED will still be an integral part of my business, but only just a part and I could survive just fine with or without it... Honestly, if it weren't for my hobbyist ambitions, I would be buying something like a Varicam or even just living with something less like just my HVX and calling it good. My clients don't need RED... The geeky wanna-be filmmaker inside of me needs RED and my clients get to reap some of the benefit while I prep them to pay more for my services since I will have much better looking footage than my HVX using competition. :)
Seriously, RED isn't that expensive compared to what many people invest in their hobbies. Be it antique cars, motorcycles, flying a plane, sculpting, etc... My wife is thankful I'm buying RED... Because if I didn't, I'd probably go blow the money on a sports car. And that sports car would cost a lot more in the end, won't hold its resale value near as well (theoretically) and me cruising it around town isn't going to make me any money.

Is a life well spent, any more than moving from one good hobbie to another? Most creative people that I know can't sit still very long, and dream of a day when they can afford to follow thier foolhardy ambitions. Making movies is creative venture and not a sport for the entirely well grounded. Long live RED
Hobbies are fun
Real work sucks
May we all become pro's at our hobbies!
and then get paid for them.

Does Yes I am as well mean both pro and hobbyist? If so i'd probably put that, Red's a tool for professional use, but it's also a cool piece of kit you can spend countless hours messing about doing your own thing with.

Both hobbyist and pro. It'll be used for business as well as fun personal projects.

As long as we're not "Enthusiasts"! That term's always smelled a bit pejorative to me... phew.

Reading through that thread I get the feeling "they don't know what they're talking about" for the half of it....

Yeah, but a lot of the "pros" sadly have no clue when it comes to Red workflow either...
"You mean it doesn't record to tape? People are going to have to bring along a DVCPRO HD deck to feed it into then..."
...is a recent comment I heard...
If the pros did have a clue, you should have 10,000 reservations by now. I'm sure it'll happen soon though.

It'll happen. I'll probably shoot my daughter's ballet and ice skating programs with RED... And she's only 4. hahahahahaha. :w00t: I plan to shoot everything from minor family and personal stuff up to real work with RED. The only exception will be times where there's a huge time/space crunch and the HDV camcorder will be the best bet.

I've actually read some great stuff on that forum about digital cable boxes and such. I especially loved the thread where people were talking about how their analog RGB hook-ups actually looked better than when they switched their hook-ups to expensive HDMI cables. Reminded me of when people would debate that they could tell the difference between analog RGB and DVI connections on their PC displays.

AVSforum is a good forum -- lots of good info there for home theatre systems and that sort of thing. A few people there really know their stuff. Cinema cameras are beyond the scope of that site though, I'm kinda surprised that RED popped up there. But RED has been getting a lot of good (and free) press since NAB and the Peter Jackson short. But RED isn't totally out of place there... Plenty of AV and HT buffs out there who have spent in excess of $50 to $100 K for their home theatre setups.

I'm a hobbyist for real, in that I have no professional use. I just love watching this amazing story unfold before my eyes, with appealing characters and exciting developments!
Unfortunately, that means I have to wait until the "Red Mini" before I have a realistic chance of affording one. But I'm very enthusiastic about the camera, because I really love the way it's being made and designed -- by people who are truly passionate about what they're doing. That seems rare in this often-depressing day and age and so RED is a very inspiring story for me.
It's even made me interested in Oakley sunglasses, so Jim might make some money off me before he gets that Mini out. Anyone know how well that rain/dust resistant coating works in the real world?

I'm a hobbyist myself... leeching my school for the use of their Z1e's... never made a dime of it, almost. But as I've said before. I'm quite excited about the Red.
And it's going to feel wierd as it probably will start show up stuff on the net that would never have gotten the privilige of s35.
I'm just waiting for the first red-shot 4.5k porn-scenes to start showing up on torrentspy and the likes. Or maybe those guys still want to wait for the red-mini... But I just know it's going to happen.
Or people filming their cats in out of focus 4K and then downsizing it for youtube. ;)
In short. I'm quite interested in what kind of "miss-use" this camera will have to put up with. Be it porn, cats or regular "avant garde filmmaking"...
I'm just hoping that I'm getting to see it:D

If you shoot crappy footage and put it up on teh Intarwebs, Jim will personally show up at your doorstep and take back the camera. :)

LMAO - Now that's funny, in fact it could be made into a reality series, "You Suck - I Want My Camera Back."
