Hi,
just new to this site but Red camera looks like the tool all small productions have been looking for for years. Has it come to the UK yet?
Thanks

First cameras haven't been realised yet. The lowest UK reservation number I know of posting on this forum is Roryhinds who has a reservation for camera number 68. According to the "Tentative shipping schedule" (http://www.red.com/news/view/79) it is due to be delivered in June, but as no cameras have been shipped yet it is too early to know if this shipping date wil slip or not. We shall see.

RED is currently on an engineering delay from their tentative shipping schedule
Still all good things come to those that wait and those already with reservations must be glad for everyone else the red revolution will take a little longer to arrive....
Still we hope to rent red in October of this year..

They are also doing other improvements and adjustments. Red is at the final hurdle in completing their camera and as indicated elsewhere, the final hurdle can often be the most difficult.
We all have great faith and trust in red to deliver this year. At the end of the day that is fine with most of us reserveation holders.

Hi Guys,
From what I can tell from the map and talking to various hire houses around the UK, Red is being taken up by individuals. (Axis have 2 on order at Shepperton, no one else seems to have reacted yet).
Are we to surmise that the red is being bought for indie features? This is certainly the case for me. I'm a DoP with several low budget jobs this year and want to avoid the horrible tape compromise that camera providers want to force on us. Are there people out there with similar interests and hopefully complementary skills that want to collaborate?
I am also keen to know if not this route why else are people committing to RED?

Hello Mike! London calling (Plummy BBC announcer accent circa 1943) :red_bandana:
I'm down for a RED but I put my order in post NAB so I think that I can hope for delivery in early 2008. If you've put your order in already then I guess you can hope for the same schedule. Still if I get mine first you'd be welcome to come down to play with my toys; as long as your mother calls mine first..:whistling:
I'm getting it to film a low budget feature. It's a no brainer really, eh...
I'm not sure how easily it will fit into my other TV production work though, especially at first. If I can guide, or even do, the post-production, then I think I can make it work. And christ when those dumb Exec's see the footage, their going to be amazed.
But I don't know.. 4K???
I still get loads of people asking me to video at SD on the Sony HDV Z1 cam!

Hi Mike; I live in Herefordshire and have a Red on order but I ordered mine the same week as Nab was running so won't get it until 2008. Still, while I am waiting I and am writing the script for a feature I am planning to shoot with the Red.
I suppose I am an Indie film maker but my day job is making armour for films such as Gladiator, A Knights Tale, Alexander and many more.
I have been DoP on two shorts using my JVC HD100; great camera and have now decided to move up to the Red. The reason being the big quality boost, the price and of course that big S35mm sensor; bit of a difference between the HD100's 1/3.
But I won't be committing to my feature until I have shot a couple of shorts so I know the camera inside and out.
I am hoping to get financial backing for my feature, lots of armour needless to say. But it would be nice to touch base with fellow future Red owners in the UK because I think it would be good to have options for more than one camera.

Hey David and Fergus,
Good to hear from fellow indie film makers. Hey David I was in Malta for Monte Cristo after Gladiator. The Maltese local crew all still had the haircuts!
I reckon we will all need to help each other out in one way or another and it would indeed be good to start the ball rolling sooner rather than later. I am testing the Red, early delivery number, if it comes out this summer. I'll let you know the results.
What config have you guys gone for?

We are getting the RED to service our productions and work with other film makers - offering the complete solution production and post production.
As far as I know MINE will be the first in the UK.
We will be offering Shoot - Edit - Colour Grade - FINISH with a Indy 35mm Film Out option for theatrical release.
Needless to say we will have a PIMPED RED.
If you have a project and want to chat, give me a call.

Hey Rory,
Good to know you are one of the earliest in the UK. Mine won't be here for another 7 months at least. BUT I do have access to another RED from the continent and we plan to shoot Setember, if it is ready. Otherwise it's back to DCT for us until next year.

Hi Mike
I never got to Malta as all our Roman armour was used for the opening battle scenes which was filmed in Farnham. Most of my work is done before principal photography begins so I don't get to go on location.
I have ordered a Red One with the basic production pack, Red Drive and the Nikon mount. A friend of mine has a set of converted Nikkor lenses we will use on recieving the camera. I will also be adding the EVF. As the Red Team are still developing the accessories I will make my final choices when the first cameras start to ship. I bought a lot of accessories for my HD100, mattbox, follow focus, Flyer Steadicam and a load of grip stuff; not sure whether the all up weight of a rigged Red is going to be too much for it all so I would rather wait and actually try it all out before I decide if I have to replace it all. I hope not; I would hate to have to start over again.
I have a dual 2.5 Mac with AJA LH card running FCS 5.2 and Shake and now I am thinking that I might have to go Intel, I hope it won't be necessary to start with.
I don't know whether I am unusual but I just love making films for the fun of it. The first short film I made with a film makeup artist friend of mine using the HD100 won best film in a local film festival; we even had our own film premiere at our local cinema with a digital projector. We got so much buzz from it we decided to shoot another short last year using a pro crew and actors; we are still in post with that.
When I heard about the Red from a producer friend of mine I just couldn't resist the urge to own one, and so here I am waiting inline with everyone else for the chance of a lifetime to own the best camera available at a fraction of the price of an 2/3 ENG camera.
I am lucky that my business can support my passion for making film but there is a limit to what I can spend and I am just astounded by what Jim and his team have produced.
If I was a bit younger I would consider changing my career and working with my Red camera as a business but I get so much enjoyment and pleasure from making my own films on small budgets that it doesn't worry me that I make no money from my projects; yet!
I think it's a great idea Mike that we keep in touch and even meet up sometime. Even better that we might be able to help each other out from time to time. Perhaps we should form a UK Red owners club; swapping ideas and showing our work?

Good luck to you all and respect to those who got their deposits down ages ago.
If the RED camera lives up to expectations it could precipitate a filmmaking revolution. But I keep telling myself: it's just a tool. If we're going to make great movies we're going to need great scripts, great actors, great directors, and great cinematographers.
So it's money...mouth time :help:

There was a meetup a few weeks ago for a lot of the prospective UK Red owners in London. Rory at #68 will be the first in the UK followed by Colm #171, then there is a big gap to me at #445 and Nick Shaw, James from PostFactory and Toby Marsden at the 460 mark so just after myself.
James has infact ordered 5 cameras but not all at the same time, and I'm fairly sure some people have bought smaller mulitples, so it isn't just individuals. Interestingly from the meet everyone seemed to stem from different backgrounds, some DP, some editors, some in post, some new to the industry etc. The range of individuals buying into the camera here in the UK is quite diverse and not as might have been anticipated.
I'd be more than happy for anyone to come and have a play about with mine once it arrives. So any of those later reservation holders or non res holders feel free to give me a shout.

Brilliant! Thanks mate..
I've been chatting about the new Zodiac film in other threads. It comes out in the UK this friday. Filmed on a Viper, and totally tape free in post (except for backups). It is the RED workflow in action. But the Viper is not nearly as good a camera it would seem, so we should be able to make better movies (allowing for the fact that the Script Writer, Director, DoP, actors etc etc on Zodiac are total geniuses - Respect). It seems that the issue with any video is the "clipped highlights or noisy shadows" problem. SO ANYWAY :whistling:
I'd love to get some lenses on a RED asap and do LOTS of tests. The general idea seems to be to underexpose the RAW files and then bring them back in the GRADE. But finding exactly the best settings in every different situation is going to take quite a bit of trial and error, including lots of mucking around in Final Cut Studio...:nerd:
Maybe we should set up a UK RED users group. Also so we know who to beg for help if our camera goes bang in the middle of a shoot, or who to hire if we need a multicam setup..?

I think this was Stephen Webbs idea with redcamera.net (http://www.redcamera.net/). I know he is keen to build a UK user community over there.

Yes, please, everbody - it'd be great if we could get something up and going between us. The meet up in London t'other week was fantastic & it'd be good if we could keep that whole community thing going online as well.
Feel free to give me ideas on where to take things with it and send me articles to post etc.

Paul,
That sounds like something I would appreciate. I am sure that there will be plenty of teething problems once the Red comes out and we can help by putting our heads together as we will all hit the same issues, depending on config and post. I have access to early serial numbers, not in this country, and will be testing the first cameras to ship. I have links with a soho post house who are going to help with post. I plan to push this baby to see what we can get out of her and see what dynamic range we can get, what the lowlight/highlight issues are and how it responds to over and under exposure.. usual stuff. I also need to test the workflow to see if we can get it up and running for September... Well it pays to be ambitious! If not it's back to DCT for me.
Is everyone looking to dump onto raid array and back up to LTO type system?

Hey David,
Sounds like a good low budget film maker's package You decided not to have the RAW ethernet port factory installed? UK Red Users Club sounds good and from this thread sounds like we have a few enthusiastic film makers to join it. Have you signed up to ReduserUK?

Backup is still something I'm waiting on Mike, with the developments such as LTO4 and different flash memory I don't want to tie myself into anything until as late as possible in some respects.
Flameop runs a post production facility based in Manchester, we've already discussed getting together early on once my camera arrives so feel free to come along and join us then.

Nothing as yet, when I have a estimated shipping date I will decide. It also depends on whether I have any jobs for when it arrives that require specific items. Lots of variables to decide on really. For example if 64GB flash cards are out in the next few months and are relatively inexpensive I'll probably go with the flash bay over the 320GB red drives and backup to RAID, external HDD's or tape on set.

Hi Mike
Thanks for the link to the ReduserUK site; I have just registered. I have another site to keep an eye on every night now. Since ordering my camera my evenings have been spent getting up to speed with the Red technology. By reading as many posts as I can I am learning loads so by the time I get my Red I will hope to have everything post wise, in place. Although a lot can happen between now and 2008 so I am not commiting to any big changes on the hardware side.
I like the simplicity of the Red drive; am I right in assuming that the factory fitted ethernet port will loose the option of the flash drive? I see this as being very useful for reducing the weight so I don't exceed the weight limit of my Steadicam Flyer. I just can't afford to spend out on the Archer; I would much rather spend that on a set of Red primes, oh yes!

Anything I can do to help with pipelines etc. I'm in. :)
Were considering buying at least one red-drive for ourselves also.
Got a few "field" raid options also worth considering.
Looking forward to buying a large peli case :)

I do! lol.. 4 or 5 disk sata raids at the mo linked via sata card in expansion slot on macbookpro all inside a portable case. So the FW port isn't taken up for red-drive.
Trying to figure out how to get raid 5 as most are on cards or expensive raids. May do a 2x 5 disk mirrored set yet.
Currently an 8disk raid(5) running at 400MBs is looking about £900 but to big really.
I know speed isn't the main priority in field as its backup and also limited to about 200MBs on expansion port sata cards but being able to use them elsewhere.. 2x5disk raids striped would be a bonus usage for us.
Many options still.. though wouldn't like to use a usb compact flash reader!lol..

I am a flameop.. yes. Well was.. left where I was to start own business with head of 3D from old place :)
Power is something were looking into at the moment. Depends on if it's simply for back-up/archive or if you want to get clever on set, which I do :)
For a large raid I'm looking into mini UPS also... never be to safe! especially with wires all over the place on set and lots of tired people with coffee! lol.

Some of the first cameras will be based out of Axis Films, Shepperton Studios, where there is already a vibrant camera rental operation, with all the support kit and crew you could need, as well as a great real-time 4K DI setup with 18ft digital projection screen (well, I would say it is great as I set it up!).
Other info via the website links in my sig.
