Can anybody recommend anything suitable please.

Anything that can emulate super 35mm field of view characteristics @ 16:9 should be appropriate from a technical perspective. I'm sure people will make recommendations beyond that...

Hi,
There is a PL mounted Mitchell/JDC finder on Ebay now.

For my budget it will be a Nikon D80 with a 17-55 f2.8.

Will that be good enough? That'd be really great! I just bought on ebay a Nikon to Canon adapter to put Nikon glass on my Rebel (yeah, I know). If I could use it as a director's viewfinder also, that'd be very useful...!

Yeah, Nikon 35mm and Canon 1.6 crop DSLRs have almost exactly the same active sensor are as the Mysterium when shooting 4K. So the FOV, DOF, etc, should all match within reason.

Arri makes a very nice directors finder. I believe its around $1,200-$1,500. PL Mount, interchangable ground glasses and very compact.

This image from my FAQ should help compare the sizes. Note that this image isn't done, but its scale is accurate.
The red format on the sensor is 35mm/4K. The dark blue and pink areas on the SLR sensor are Canon and Nikon. The grey lines going up and down the image are the 4K and 4.5K Mysterium widths.
So they're similar... but obviously not exact.

the dslr route has the added advantage of actually shooting stills that match up very well with red one. all you are giving up is the cool factor but you are gaining lots of value in terms of actually shooting stills you can use not to mention the metering advantage.

That's a great idea - I have a D80 too. A dslr would make a great viewfinder, especially for those on a budget.

I'm planning on using my Canon 20D as my viewfinder - with the sensor size being close enough for indie work and the Canon L lenses going from my 20D to the Birger EOS adapter it is all gold.
At least compared to my old D30 with the DVX100 setup. Ugh.

Any idea if the Nikon to Canon adapter will change something about this? Such as this one [link] (http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-Adapter-for-NIKON-lens-Canon-EOS-Camera-Monolith_W0QQitemZ300107156746QQihZ020QQcategoryZ3 343QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).
I guess not, as I don't think it change the FOV, but does someone know for sure?

Should not change apparent FOV as all it does is adapt one flange focale distances to another.

For budget reasons, I plan to get the D40 and use it on set as a DVF, among other things. I've read that it matches up very well to the D80 at a cheaper price point and lighter weight. As a bonus, the 18-55 lens it comes with is close (enough) to the 18-50 RED lens I plan on getting, so it will be useful for pre-viz.
