Do we know when the exchange of the boards will start to happen for the oldies (#711)?:excl: :mail1:

The upgrade program is happening now. We do not have a schedule to post. I would think your batch would be toward end of 2008/early 2009. Just an estimate as volume on a week by week basis is pretty hard to predict...

Several reports are coming in that with the Audio Hardware upgrade for the Red One the eyepiece pulsates with the audio coming into the camera on any of the TA3's ports. At this point no one is reporting if this is affecting the picture quality being recorded.

I just ran (via TA3) some Metallica, House, and some classic '80s music into ELVIS (RED #006) which has new audio upgrade - and my EVF does not pulsate - I've never heard this before.

I don't have serial numbers, but just last week while I was on a major commercial campaign for the #1 video game console we experienced it on the upgraded camera. Cameras were from a local LA rental house.
Two of my partners have experienced it here in Los Angeles as well. Both were on commercial productions and the cameras were from rental houses.
In all cases audio was sent to the red camera from the sync sound recording system. In my case the recording system was a Cantar X2 using the Aaton line level booster adapter. Timecode was continuously feed via a Ambient ACL202TC to the R1.
I also tried sending wirelessly to the R1 and the pulsating continued. Power for the Red1 was provided by Red batteries and the Anton Bauer Cine series.
The other recorder system used was a Fostex DV824 and a Cooper 208D also feeding line level. TC was not sent to the camera.
If I have more information I will update

Brent any approximate idea for 1150???
Can some one from RED talk about the EVF pulsation rumor?
Nicholas Shields

It may be difficult for Red to reply. They're a little busy right now complaining about a UK company making an accessory for their camera. Take a look at where they're posting and you'll quickly find out what's important and what's not. According to initial estimates, most of our cameras should have had a new audio board by now.

It may well be that all of the cameras in this report had the new audio board. But there is no way to know if the board is the cause, until the reported cameras come in for evaluation. The board has been shipping for a while so there are many cameras with the upgrade. It would be great if when people have these issues in the field if they report them at the time to Red. Help us help you. We want to diagnose this properly.

Yeah, was typing a reply to you, TJ, then saw Nicholas' post. Apparently, there is an unwritten rule that says RED can only address threads on mounts so sorry...

Sorry TJ. I didn't realize the implications of my last post. The irony is that I defend this forum all the time - especially at cinematography.com. However, if you take a look at how many questions go unanswered in this audio forum vs. others, it's undeniable that... never mind. Sometimes I forget the rules of the sandbox. I recant my last post with the deepest of apologies to those that were offended and to those who were denied information based on the fallout.
Nick.

I experineced the audiosignal disturbing the EVF, it happened with the old audio board some weeks ago, didnīt pay much attention to it since i shoot 95% of the time with no audio into the camera, but i will tomorrow if i can reproduce it.

According to initial estimates, most of our cameras should have had a new audio board by now.
Correct, "according to initial estimates". However since then, we have evolved the upgrade program beyond the audio board and i/pin data. We have added battery plate updating, lens firmware updating, cable swaps, etc. With added tasks to be performed - all at no charge to the customer - the processing time has increased. The good news is as we do more and more of these upgrades, we are streamlining the process and our pace is picking up. So, prior history of cameras per week is not a true indicator of future.
That being said, we cannot control when a camera is sent in - that is up to the customer as it is done at THEIR convenience. That leaves spikes and valleys in camera gear inbound to us. And, with a lot of people going on holiday in the coming weeks, we expect a big influx of cameras to hit both us here in the US and at the RED EUROPE facility.
So, with that unpredictability of when cameras will arrive, we can't post a firm (or even loose) schedule. If we get a ton of cameras in one week, we do not send out the email to additional people to send in their gear that week.
So everyone understands, RED has two teams entirely dedicated to this upgrade program - one here in the US and one in the UK. We are getting through cameras as quickly as possible - not rushing (that is not a good idea for you or us). It is a very time-consuming process that required additional space, people, parts, etc. This is not something we are taking lightly and I hope everyone appreciates that fact. So, please be patient. It is very frustrating for everyone involved at RED in this process to hear people act like we are dragging our feet or just not going fast enough for their taste.
It is okay to be anxious and excited. It is not cool to act like we are letting you down or taking too long.

I have to agree with Brent, RED will not let you down. I feel very fortunate just to have an R1 and I recommend to just keep shooting and in due time you will get that special email and we should be thankful its a FREE service charge.
This is my 1000th post I think so I wanted to at least say
"Have a great holiday RED team...keep up the good work and thanks for everything!"
Sincerely

Indeed, may a little gratitude and grace invade the few petty grumblers, the naysayers, the poor Scrouges of our community -- and open their eyes to the incredible cornucopia of generosity Red has shed on us all! And my bet is the elves at Red will be putting in new sound boards et cetera, even on Christmas eve...

Red this is for you =
Is there a concrete specifc number of off the line Cameras that already have the upgrades incorporated?
Cameras after 2500? 3000? 3500? At which point did the off the shelf numbers go out with all the upgrades?

On a related note:
Is there a specific date when Battery Plates were shipped with current gen mating pin assemblies?
I received a Battery Plate and Belt Clip about 5 weeks ago and I'm wondering if they are current gen....

Can't use camera serial number to determine if new audio board is in there as some people with early serial numbers got their camera delivered after it was in place. You have to use invoice date. Any camera invoiced (the date is on the invoice that came with your camera) after Sept 12 have the new audio board.
I checked my old emails and see that current gen BATTERY PLATES have been shipping since at least June.

A lost of people have sent in their gear over the last couple of weeks since a lot of people are down for the holidays. So, we saw a huge spike in volume. That being said, next email should go out next week for your group, Luis.

I gather Red is in the 700's at this time. I understand your reluctance to announce any kind of schedule you can not control, but it's really critical for us to be able to make plans for the upcoming year. So, at what VERY APPROXIMATE pace are the upgrades happening? 100 per month? 50? 250?. Just a rough idea will help us know if we have a sound camera in March, July, or October, which is important information.
I will have to run double system sound until then, and need to plan accordingly.

Thanks,

Sent in my Red with the Birger mount (installed) and the PL mount, per the shipping instructions in the upgrade email. I received an email from John Restivo saying that they couldn't accept any camera with a 3rd party mount installed, and they were going to have to ship it back to me without doing any work. I had to argue and read their email back to them several times before they finally agreed to perform the i/pin upgrade on the mount separately. It was a pain.
Don't send your camera to them with the Birger mount on it, regardless of what you read in the email with the shipping instructions.
Brian Fairbanks
05-06-2009, 06:10 PM
That is correct. I apologize that the wording was not more clear. The only mounts that you should send your camera in with are the Red PL Mount or the Red Nikon Mount. If you have any questions feel free to shoot me an email (bfair-at-red-dot-com).
Thanks,
Brian
