There are enough people in the SF user group discussion t o warrant this Santa Cruz user thread. SC is maybe an hour away for me while the proposed SF meeting in Napa would be more like 3+ hour drive.

So, who's in? :)

Greg Ephraim
11-23-2008, 07:21 PM
haha, you weren't lying about making a Santa Cruz group eh?

Brandon Fraley
11-23-2008, 07:54 PM
nope, even if it's just 3 or 4 of us, I still think it's worth meeting up sometime. :)

chrislayhe
11-24-2008, 06:56 PM
Well, sometimes you just have to be bold... how about Thursday December 4th at 6.30pm for coffee or something frothy somewhere central for an inaugral gabble?

Chris.

Brandon Fraley

feel free, but I'm out of town until the 11th I think. I'm free after that through the holiday though

So even the best laid plans of men and mice can be foiled - we'll try somehting else after the break...

I'll have to catch you guys when I get back.

Chris

Brandon Fraley

totally. My schedule is all over the place for some reason, but if you guys just set a date I'll see if I can make it (as the hobbyist I probably won't have as much to lend to the conversation anyway ;)

I'm down.

How 'bout meeting downtown at Bad Ass Coffee or the Perg some evening...

Or Mai Tai's at Ideal?

Well, guys and gals, it has to be worth trying to get together the area RED users together post-NAB - in Santa Cruz or perhaps just over the hill in Los Gatos so the folk from South San Francisco can make it too...

Any suggestions on a date and time that might work?

Chris.

Brandon Fraley
04-19-2009, 10:27 PM
I'm out of town until the 5th, so if it's after that I should be good :)

Jason Beckwith
04-20-2009, 01:32 PM
Any Santa Cruzans going to the Red event at NAB?

I'd love to hook up and find out who's working in our area...

Whatever

Stephen Lovett

Not to my knowledge Brandon.

BTW congrats on your Vegas film, nice work.

I've been watching and both these threads have been dead for awhile.

I'm in process of buying Red 1644, but that's still a few weeks out due to shipping / inspection / warranty transfer / shipping to me.

It would be great to meet some local Red users, count me in.

Vegas film? Not that i know of... different Brandon?

Yeah, I'm up for either a SC/SF meeting. I'm also looking for any opportunity for work (at silly cheap day-rates), so if anyone wants another operator/helper or an extra camera, let me know :)

My bad,

I know we've exchanged emails, and there are a couple of other Brandon's on the board that I've interacted with, sorry.

How about we figure out where people are, and figure out a central location.

I'm dead center of silicon valley, so it's about the same distance for me either way.

Oh yeah! How's that prom dress movie coming? I delayed my feature because I couldn't get the right people together and I was preparing to move down south for a gig, but that plan changed and now I'm saving more money and planing on moving north this fall, East Bay probably.

In Monterey now. About 1 hour hour south of Santa Cruz, 2 of SF.

I was looking to shoot some Visual Effects compositing test shots next week with a friend who attends the Academy of Art (we were going to make use of their green screen studio) using my HVX200, however some buttons decided to stop working. Unfortunately the Academy only loans HVX's to grad students, don't even think about the Red camera.

I was hoping a Red user here would be down to help as fill in for a day or two tops (we are willing to accomodate your schedule). Keep in mind we are students, while we can throw a few greenbacks your way for gas and troubles, 500 a day is simply out of our budget.

If you have reservations I understand being the owner of a decent (though admittedly not nearly as hot) camera. However feel free to ask me questions or if you want to meet up with me in person beforehand (I am based out of San Jose though I attend classes at Berkeley, and my Academy friend is in Foster City).

The only thing else I can offer is our labor in exchange. I've done some grip work and on set assistance (AC and PA). He's done some AC work, and is working towards a Visual Effects compositing and lighting background. I will be gone after the next week but my friend can get you access to the greenscreen studio in the future (from what I'm told every wall including the floor is green, not sure about ceiling.)

In addition I have a tripod and p2 card along with a hvx200 that only records but does not capture and will need fixing. I know I know. That's like a lightweight offering to be a heavyweight's bodyguard, but I want you know this isn't some hit and run demand for favors. I am a man of my word and my labor is my currency.

I hope you guys can get this off the ground. I'm at UCSC and plan to be a Scarlet owner once you Red loyalists get your fill of the supply and the new customers have a chance to join in. Well, next week is thanksgiving...

How about trying again on Friday the 4th of Dec.?

That's two weeks out, and still before all the holiday engagements begin.

Let's go for Cafe Pergolesi (http://theperg.com/) at 8pm.

They have free wifi as well, so if we have a couple laptops around, we can share work that we've shot, etc.

Anyone down for it?

I won't be able to attend and I would have little to contribute if I were able because I have no RED experience as of yet, but I'm glad you guys are paving the way for future Santa Cruz-area meetings.

Pergolesi might be a bit loud and crowded on a Friday night though. I've only been there a few times, but it might be standing room only at best and there might be a live band playing at worst. Not that there's anything wrong with that and it's a cool place to grab some coffee, but I wonder how much RED discussion you'll manage. If you've been there a bunch of times on a Friday night and I'm way off base, then please ignore me, but I just thought I'd mention it.

However your meeting goes, please post about the aftermath.

Guys, I'm weeping here... you had a RED party in Santa Cruz in the rain and nobody called to let us know after trying to set one up for months?

I'm thinking that perhaps we need a little email notification/pm list before the next one... does anybody feel like that might be a good idea - if needs, send me a pm with an email address and I'll make up a group and kick out a notice for those of us who are out and about and can't check the listings too often...

Philip Lima

Hey Guys,
I'm hoping I can make it out to the next meeting. Though I don't currently own a RED, I have worked alongside Kennan Ward, who many of you in this community have heard of, both in the field and as his senior editor. I would love to get more connected with other RED owners and users to see what everyone is doing!

And I agree with Chris about having an email go out as a reminder when a meeting comes up. I am often on the road/in the field and don't have a chance to check reduser as much as I'd like!

Sean Laskey

Regarding Chris' idea for an email list for future meetings, here's my email:
sklaskey@comcast.net

I met up with Jason last week in SC. The value in the meetings is:

1. Meet cool (like-minded) people and learn from them.
2. Become "emergency" equipment sources for each other ("Help! I'm up HWY1 and a bear just ate my CF cards!")
3. Crew with each other.
4. Find out who does/has what... Steadicam, cranes, dollies and tracks, underwater stuff, extreme-conditions gear, etc., etc.

I look forward to the next meeting! Take care.

Tim Duran

Sean et al, any idea of how many attendee's would show up if there were no time conflicts with anyone's schedules? I'm near San Jose I've seen virtually no flag waiving from anyone who admits to being from the South Bay interested in Red or interested in film education How broad an area are you servicing do you think?

Please include me in your mailing list: tcduran@whitedovefilms,com Please be sure to give decent notice

Stephen Lovett

Hi Tim,

I'm in the south bay, and if fact we held a RED event a couple of months back at Silicon Valley Studios. Chris and Brandon and I were there, and another fellow who just moved to the bay area who's name I can't recall at present.

We had four RED's up and running in a general education event.

I've had my hands full lately and was unable to attend the last Santa Cruz based event, but some of us are already discussing doing some more outreach like events in the new year here in the valley.

I'll keep you updated.

All the best,

Steve

Sean Laskey
12-19-2009, 11:09 PM
Hey, Tim.

I'm not sure how many would attend a Santa Cruz event as I'm probably the most recent addition. I actually live in Pleasanton. I'm happy to meet with the San Jose "and" the Santa Cruz users... the more, the better!

I've had my Red for about 2 months now and for the most part, I've worked through a ton of issues making the transition. The forum has been my best friend but there's not a substitute for sharing info in-person. I'm a Steadicam Op. and recently got my Steadicam Flyer LE to accept a Red. Coming in at the 19lb payload limit took some effort. Doing it with only the web/forum as a guide yielded pretty good results... but I'm sure it would have been a lot faster and probably a lot more efficient had I had someone to ask.

I think all of us have some tips we can offer to others to make their lives easier. Let's got together in the new year!

Take care.

Sean

chrislayhe
12-20-2009, 05:24 PM
Hi Phillip,

You are going to have to stop hanging around in fields and on roads or you will be reported to the police as a weird pervo...

In the meantime, perhaps anyone who might want to be notified on a RED get together somewhere in January should drop me a PM with their email address and I'll put together a contact list when I've given the message a week or two to perculate and maybe send it out so we have a round robin thing going on... and I will now go and gaze lovingly at my Red Pro Prime set sitting in their new boxes all pretty and sparkly before Charley brutally manhandles them!

Chris

Jason Beckwith
12-21-2009, 01:17 PM
I tried to go to the event at the Silicon Valley Studios, but it was full online. I called someone at the studio and they told me that they were at capacity and no no one else could come. I was bummed that they wouldn't let me attend.

That's kind of why I tried resurrecting the SC thing...

I'm more than down for setting up another. I have some contacts and could get us a spot at a studio in the south bay, if there's enough interest.

How about we try another Santa Cruz get together after the holidays? We could go for the Perg again on the friday the 22nd? Or whenever. My calendar is pretty open for January right now, unfortunately. I'm completely open to suggestions.

I'd like to get the dialogue going, since we seem to have a little momentum right now.

Just let me know, and I'll do whatever I can to help facilitate.

chrislayhe
12-22-2009, 08:46 AM
Jason, you are the man! Sorry about the studio RED evening - they got to about 60 rsvp people and pulled the plug on any more, which was a shame because we would have talked all night!!!!
