Desert mesas at sunset are great and all, but does anyone have 617 format images of people or groups? Also, can anyone shed some light on 617 DOF and overall feel relative to medium format or 35mm?

617 is mostly used as a panoramic image format. Think HS senior class photo...

Yeah, that's the problem because, I'd imagine, 99% of potential Epic 617 users won't be filming class photos or panoramas in 24p. I'm trying to get an idea of how 617 handles close-ups, two shots, etc.

I think the 617 is going to mostly be used as a specialty rental item for select projects, but we'll see.

Possibly, but 617 should also appeal to guys like Nolan (and Nolan wannabes) who wish Imax wasn't such a beast. The DOF, rectilinearity and overall feeling of these large formats is really impressive. Dark Knight proved 70mm isn't just for submersibles and space shuttles.
Imax: 49mm x 70mm
645: 42mm x 56mm
617: 56mm x 186mm

With a standard lens of, what? 150mm-180mm, DoF is relatively shallow.
Background plates will be awesome...

You're going to need a good make-up artist for those 261 Megapixel portrait shots

Have a look at http://www.roundshot.ch/xml_1/internet/de/application/d438/d925/f934.cfm
There are plenty 6x17 shots in there, just remember that the Seitz 617 is a scanning back and not a one shot or motion film cam :shifty:

the late William Corey shot vertical portraits with his 8x20 view camera

I shot some with my 4x10 and a 305 lens during college that came out really cool.
I can't wait for the red 617!

Josh,
I know this guy Platon used to do a lot of portraits with an 8x10 view camera. Not sure what he's up to these days. Interesting look.

Take a look at this guys work:

He has a technique for stitching photographs together to achieve a larger format effect. I think it makes the work look macro, which is an interesting idea, at least potentially.

Exactly...one thing I'm surprised hasn't been stated enough around here is that fact that even with the 645, you're getting IMAX in the palm of your hand...those IMAX cameras are HUGE. With a RED you can cradle a 9k image in your lap....unbelievable. I said it before and I still strongly believe the 645, maybe even the 617 (why not?) will become workhorses for those huge summer blockbusters of the future. Jon Favreau has already made statements about wanting to shoot the next Iron Man on IMAX and acknowledges Nolan for breaking the ice...my guess is that more directors will opt for the RED now for the aforementioned reasons.
