What's the differnce (optical and otherwise) between the "E" series and Nikkor Lenses?

The "E" series were the Economy Nikkors, they are not bad optically, especially the 100mm 2.8 and 17-150m 3.5 but they are not made as well as the AI and AIS brethren.

Thanks Evin... What is the E AIS series about? How's the 135mm in that series?

I've found every E series lens to be among the sharpest; In fact, they are in many cases, sharper than expensive AF and AFS lenses. You just can't go wrong with an E series lens. All E series lenses are AIs.

Hi,

25 years ago I tested a 28mm E series V 28mm AIS on a motion control rig. The results were projected on a large screen. The 28mm was way better, no contest

I'm not sure what you mean...which of the two was better, the 28mm E series or the 28mm AIs?

The 28mm f2.8 AIS is one of Nikons great underrated lenses. It was redesigned in the AIS version and is possibly the best standard WA available today. It knocks the socks off of anything else in it's focal range save the 17-35mm 2.8 Nikkor and even that only comes close. This was Nikon flexing it's optical muscle.

Hi,

Sorry 28mm AIS was the clear winner.

Definitely! I'd say 2nd in line would be 28mm f/2 Ai

Hi,

All things being equal I would expect a 2.8 version to outperform a 2.00 or 1.4 as the light has to travel through more glass in the faster lenses.

I'll b posting my 28mm f1.4 Nikkor review shortly. It's my favorite Nikkor hands down. It has a ground Aspheric element and the most beautiful bokeh of any of my fast lenses. This lens really does hold it's own, even at f1.4. I'm not sure it can surpass the F2.8 AIS at f8 but it beats the pants off it at 2.8 where it's stopped down to the sweet spot and the AIS is wide open.

Wait and drool.

So from what i've read i gather that I may be better sticking with the AI or AIS Nikkors correct? I realize that u get what u pay for (most of the time at least)... When I started to build my set of lenses i got a few from my uncle who had a set from 1979, they are all series E lense. The 50 1.8 was perfectly fine, the 100mm was optically fine but the focus ring is really tight.

I have a 35 f/2 AFD a 20 f/2.8 AFD 24 f/2.8 AI (after Evin's review :sarcasm: ) 50 f/1.8 E and the 100 f/2.8 E series I have done shoots and used some AFD and E series and couldn't tell any differences...Although I wasn't looking for any (differences) none certainly jumped out at me but i do realize that perhaps i wasn't in a situation that would show me any potential weaknesses BUT I want to be prepared for the situation if there is any differences HENCE my question what are the differences in these lenses....

You've got yourself a nice little pack of good lenses there. But if you wanna be further enlightened on Nikon lenses, read from these links:

FWIW (and that's probably not all that much!), imho the 28mm f2.8 AIS Nikkor is one of the best lenses Nikon make - an absolute peach...
