The Red One has four miniXLR ins.

It has mini XLR's. Interesting concept to keep the camera body small, but also means I need more gack to carry with me (XLR to mini XLR cables that I may forget to bring to set) in order to get my standard XLR's to connect to the mini's.

Hell yeah. Have to keep ontop of that. Imagine flying into a shoot with the soundie and you forgot to tell him. Better keep some in the camera bag

If your sound guy doesn't have mini XLR converter in his bag maybe you should consider a new one. As a sound guy years ago I had to carry a tackle box full of every adapter known to man. The miniXLR connector is a great idea because there is no reason for the large size of a standard XLR.

I agree. Any sound man worth his salt will have all the necessary connectors and then some. He also should have a nice toolkit and be competent enough to make a new cable with the proper connections if the need arises.

Anyway, another good one to blame it on the sound guys if you have to wait on set for the cables ;)

Worth his/her salt or not. It will happen. It will piss someone off and blaming it on someone's "salt" when you are in the middle of nowhere ain't gonna' help any.

You've heard of Murphey's Law. Well have you ever heard of McGreggor's Law - he thought Murphey was an optimist.

Well it is what it is.

4 channels of mini-XLR inputs each adjustable for line, mic or mic +48V phantom power. One mini-XLR 5 pin output.

I love the Mini XLR keep the size down I also love the mini BNC or what ever they call them. Im just going to make a couple different snakes that are maybe three to five feet that has the most common cable configuration I use and then I will have one cable coming off the camera and who ever wants to can hook into it.

I'm not a fan of this approach at all. I work with a few sound guys that have more Emmys' and years under their belt than I can count, and none of them use mXLR for anything other than the out of their Lectrosonics. I know this solution will bone me at some point, but hell that;s progress, and it's just how things are.

Well all I can say is talk with your sound guy before the shoot - give him a heads up. Then if he doesn't do anything about that before he gets to the set ...

Well, it's probably either mini XLRs, or two audio inputs... I'd take 4 mini XLRs.

It just occurred to me . . . I never thought to ask, but where are the VU meters going to be located, and how many VUs will there be? Thanks!

Aren't they on that little screen on the back?

Any change of getting 2-channels of AES audio out through the 5-pin XLR? That would be really useful!

Well, it's probably either mini XLRs, or two audio inputs... I'd take 4 mini XLRs.

I'm a sound guy(day job) I'm always having trouble with mini XLRs, they're just not as rugged as full sized XLRs. If I were doing sound on a RED, the Primary audio will be on my Aaton Cantar audio recorder. The sound on the Red would just be guide track.... So two bullet proof fullsized XLRs would be ample. IMO I would rather have two full sized regular XLRs. But four minis is very workable, I have a snake and two 75 foot extensions, with a break away at the camera side(modified ENG cable). For red, I would make a tip for my breakaway cable with mini XLR's. My recommendation is since they are more prone to being twisted, should the cable get snagged, is to stress relief the hell out of it by looping it and attaching it somewhere on the cage, (Common practice anyway with any cable from a camera or mixer etc.)
