A friend of mine is about to shoot on Red with 16mm lenses. I understand when setting up the "Resolution", the manual for Build 17 3.4.1 says you have to use 2K or 2k 2:1. Is there any problem if he selects 2K 16:9???

Shouldn't be. Some 16mm also covers 3k before they start vignetting too badly.

The only way to judge is actually to test, and see what you're happy with!

IF the lenses cover 3k, or almost 3k, I'd STRONGLY advice you to go there, and re-frame in post. The downsampled 3k images look soooooo much better than the 2k.

But do workflowtests in advance to make your own decissions.
The reframing means a lot of extra time and diskspace...

Has anyone worked out what focal length with Super 16mm lenses covers 3K? I seem to remember trying this ages ago with a Super 16mm zoom but can't remember at what focal length it started to get acceptable (there's the point where it no longer vignettes and then the point when the portholing isn't too unacceptable).

Is there an absolute answer to that? (Just curious here)
I did some tests this summer, and it seemed brand/make dependant.

I'd imagine portholing will certainly vary from lens manufacturer to lens manufacturer (and also how acceptable or unacceptable it is to the individual...sometimes it can be quite a nice effect if it's subtle!) It'd be nice to get a rough estimate on what Super 16mm focal lengths work...

I'll throw a figure out there which may well be completely wrong (my memory isn't what it used to be), but I seem to remember getting rid of vignetting around the 40mm mark and portholing became "not too bad" around 60mm(ish)...does that roughly tally with anyone else's findings?

Thanks for the replies guys. No probs using 2K 16:9 with 16mm lenses.
