View Full Version : Red Demand

Red is a truly revolutionary product, and all initial indications are that it will not sell in the thousands of units, but in the tens of thousands. For a person like myself making purchasing decisions, it is important that I be able to plan well ahead of a scheduled production to have enough cameras to complete the job on time, or to be able to engage in a production which I am not given much lead time. A hypothetical situation is this: I have one red camera. I am approached two months in advance for shooting a production which will need 3 cameras, and I have to procure them on short notice. As a relative newcomer, I cannot financially justify tying up resources into an extra two cameras, unless I have reasonable assurance that they can be put in service, but then the opportunity comes up, and a deal is signed.

So my question is this: once the RED is brought into production, how quickly can RED respond and put more manufacturing capacity online to meet demand, say for example demand quickly increases to 1000-1500 units/month, of which I believe there is a distinct possibility. And will RED have a so called "priority service" in case someone needs to buy a camera on very short notice if need arises?

I'm not going to speculate on RED demand and production abilities...

If such a scenario as you describe comes up where you need more RED cameras then I have one word for you -- RENT.

That is what I would do if I needed additional cameras.

I was thinking about something last night ...

I wonder if people 500 below on the list will get insane offers from all those naysayers out there right now for their RedOnes..

You know there are a lot of pessimistic jerks out there that think the Red will never come out.. when it does come out they are going to want one bad..

The Nintendo Wii costs $250 yet it was going for $700 around XMAS time..

I wonder how much a RedOne will fetch on ebay for..

I think if someone offered me 30k for the body alone I would have to smile, decline and caress my baby..

I would rent if I needed additional RED ONE's, but if I'm not mistaken, the few RED's that are going to be available for rent are going to be as scarce as hen's teeth for the time being. Vancouver being the nearest rental center, they're going to be in huge demand, and they'll be long waiting lists for those wanting to rent them, like when the first HVX-200's came out. I know that I'll have my one RED out for rent to any qualified person when I'm not using it.

hmmm....

I'll rent my RED out, but they have to rent me with it I think. The best advice I can offer is to make friends with others near by (within 150 miles or so) that will also be getting one. If you're near Vancouver, it shouldn't be a big problem finding people... I've seen several on these forums alone with Vancouver listed as their location... I think I also saw someone listed as from Victoria too. I suppose you could always coax someone from northern Washington to cross the border and help you out. I don't think it's going to be as big a deal as you may think.

But hey, I'll pack up my RED and related gear and fly up to Vancouver (from Colorado) if you need another and want to pay my rates and travel expenses. Seriously, I don't think the situation will be as dire as you fear. I know of 4 people within an hour drive or less (actually two within 20 minutes) from me who already have their RED reservation. Do some asking about -- if Vancouver is close to you, I would think there's options.
