View Full Version : Any advantage to a Zoom Reservation?

I am curious...for those of us that reservered zoom lenses, is there any advantage to that? So far I haven't been able to figure out any. It seems that whoever wants an 18-50mm with their camera will get one. I'm not complaining! Just curious, it seems to have been irrelevant whether you plunked down for a zoom reservation.

Well I guess you have part of the price paid for. If you have a camera reservation you are taken care of. No reservation for anything else need. But if you don't have a camera reservation then having a lens reservation would be what you would have to have. That is as far as I know. Its a good day guys to be a RED ONE reservation holder.

And at least you will forget you spent the $750, and you will get a nice little discount when the lens is out.

My zoom reservation was just thrown on a credit card that ran up interest on the $750 for the last year, it just now seems I should not have reserved my lens, as it doesn't appear to make an iota of difference when you order...unless Jim has something specific for zoom reserve holders that he hasn't announced yet.

Naughty boy, you know you should clear your CC debt at the end of each month. Mind you, I can talk

You do have a good point there.

Of course it makes a difference. Reservations give us an insight into demand!

If no-one places a reservations and then tries to get one when it's available you can probably see how we would run out of stock fast ;)

Reservation number as opposed to a serial number for your zoom?

what we know up to today ...
the 18-85mm is still in the works ( unelss i've missed a announcement) ..
which means you have a reservation for #212 ...
i have #37 ...
i would expect to get the zoom before you ( even though you have camera #27, and i have 103 ) ...
however on the 18-50 zoom - i do have a deposit on one - but even if you do not have a deposit on the 18-50 i'm under the impression that when you pick up your RED you will be able to order the 18-50 and receive it before my 18-50 ....

Oh it's obvious that it made a difference for you guys, but will there be any benefit *at all* for having reserved a Red for us reservers?

i think the more info red has on our needs and wants, the better for us. if they can judge demand for the camera and accessories, we get a more accurate delivery date.

maybe Red has to tell us how it really works. Lot of people have reservations paid on the 1st Red Zoom 18-85mm - what I think is that this version never will be build - there is no announcement on the website. Whom should we tell that we want to cancel reservationsin Red Zoom 18-85mm or change to Red Zoom 18-50mm ?

it kinda sounds like you are complaining, actually...the reservation is able to be canceled and refunded at any time, and it's not RED's fault that you're carrying additional credit card debt. that was your decision.

i'm so very glad they are making a line of cine lenses at these prices, and as with all the other breakthroughs, these will require some patience. i'm bummed that the 18-85mm appears to be on indefinite hold, but i'm betting that with the success of this camera, other choices will emerge over time. there are always hidden costs to being first in this business...that should not be a surprise. if anything, RED is the first company i've ever seen to attempt to reward their early adopters. usually, early adopters are not only the de facto guinea pigs, but we're usually charged extra for the privilege.

Hi Shawn,

If nobody had reserved a lens, then in all probability Red would have not built one. So a lens now exists at a price you want to pay, I would say that was one hell of an advantage.

Sheesh guys, you make me look like the freakin grinch here! There's no harm in asking, Jim's pattern has been to reward the people that throw their lot in with them in tangible ways and I was just inquiring as to whether that included the lens. Whether I put my lens reservation on a credit card or not is totally irrelevent, someone else holding my money for a year has market value in most cases. I don't know of too many other places where you can have someone else hold your money for a year and then at the end of the year you get nothing but your money worth. It's all fine, it was just an inquiry

Hey dude, don't stress. I'm sure a lot of us feel the same way you do but you speak your mind. That's a good thing because lemmings tend to jump off cliffs together. Sometimes it's a good thing when somebody stands up and says "now wait just a second". And you're right, most of the time there is no harm in asking. I tell that to my girlfriend repeatedly. She probably plans on shooting me the next time I say it.
