View Full Version : New Redrock adapter - contest to name it!

Brian Valente
12-09-2008, 05:21 PM
Hi everyone

We have just released a new converter bracket for adapting between 15mm lightweight, 19mm and 15mm studio. Here's a picture to help clarify:

http://www.redrockmicro.com/cartpics/microSupport_rod_converter_lg.jpg

We are holding a contest for the best name. Winner gets a free one. If you know Redrock gear, you'll know we name our gear starting with micro. microFollowFocus, microMatteBox, etc. so just a suggestion that a winning entry may start with micro :).

As soon as we settle on a name it will be available for purchase in our online store. Price is targeted around $150.

Thanks

Brian

Redrock Micromount is the best I've read so far.

Thanks

Brian

By the way - What's the exact weight of this thing (grammes as well as in oz! Thanks!)

Roberto Lequeux

50-60 pounds depending on the pour.

hahaha... j/k Brian.

I can't see it being too heavy and if it is then I am sure it is also sturdy as crap and it might be worth every ounce. It looks great

I'm sure you're right, but RED One is heavy for handheld and Steadicam - I'm trying to shave off every ounce/gramme I can!

Ouch, nice Jab Brian, why don't you offer a lifetime warranty? I'll repair or replace any Zacuto product for the lifetime of the product, no matter if it's a first owner or not. Even if the customer accidently runs over it with his car. Plus, we always have demo Jeeps in our store for $135 and they come with the same warranty. You are up kiddo.

Brian,
I didn’t realize you made your products in the USA. It doesn’t say USA or made in the USA on them. I make my products entirely in the USA for many reasons, mostly because that way I can get my ideas to market fast. Yes, it costs more than making them abroad. And I agree in many arenas, when it comes to price I can’t compete with foreign made goods. I think the quality of US made products is far superior to anything coming from the east. I offer a lifetime warranty on all of my products because I believe in them enough to know that they will last, even if they are misused.

I would never want to egg you into offering a lifetime warranty. That’s the culture of Zacuto but it’s not for every company.

P.S. If you are making your products entirely in the USA, then yes, Texas is cheaper then Chicago for machining. Unfortunately, I still need to make my products in Chicago to oversee every phase of production.

Two companies, Two philosophies.
We can duke it out, but we can still shake and be friends.

Happy Holidays Buddy.

I'm not sure how I got sucked into all of this but it's good to see all the love being handed out here. Imagine my surprise coming into work this morning to a big pile of emails and phone messages about this. Fun.

Zacuto makes a product and now RedRock makes a similar product. The designs are different but the functionality is similar. Use the unit you want based on your needs and preferences. Room for everybody I guess.

Did I mention that Abel makes its own Universal Rod Adapters? We have one for lightweight 15 to studio 19 and in a few weeks another for lightweight 15 to studio 15. Our lightweight 15 mount points are actually stubs that fit into your 15mm device so that no additional rods are needed. It's a different solution for different uses.

Just sayin'... :) :) :)

It looks like Mitch's original message has disappeared, but I felt he was making a valid point not 'sniping'.

A product that makes your camera not fit on a standard Arri dovetail isn't all that useful! You shouldn't take offense to helpful suggestions from users.

I made a joke during the naming contest. After the name was picked I made another comment that was a bit nasty in tone, no matter the veracity of the point. Brian noted this to me privately and I decided to delete my own post. (That's what I get for staying up way to late reading REDuser...)

We can all be helpful and get along. I have commented on and made design suggestions for a number of 3rd party products for RED both on and off the forum. It is actually a part of my job to consult with manufacturers about the design of their products, although generally that's when they are companies we represent, otherwise why am I giving away my expertise for free? As I said before, there's room for us to all get along, and the next time I point out a design question to a company such as RedRock I will do so in an appropriate manner.

But hey, 10 of you are getting a free rod adapter out of all of this and now some products are adding lifetime warranties!

i know this is not the thread for this, but as you may know Allstar has come out with a nice shoulder mount for RED. HOWEVER it does not include handles and things.. Please let me know A.S.A.P. as I am gearing up for a shoot. I am looking at the $195 price range if possible.

Brian

Brian,

You are correct, but I don't need all of that, and as you can imagine, if I were ok with spending, I would have ET's handheld device.

So I need a handle assembly to go with my Allstar. It's needs to be 19mm.
(I'm sure there are quite a few others in the same boat, since the Allstar seems to be selling like hotcakes)

Once you get around to offering it, let me know and I will check it out provided I have not purchased another solution by then

Thanks for the fast reply

Jay

Jay,

Our "bullet" design is for 19mm rods. We'll be shipping by then end of january hopefully.

They are really nice, self locking mechanism with "internal" rosettes.

You really should take a look at these as they are a very compact and sturdy alternative.

Currently our prototypes are out on sets as we finish our final testing phase.
