So after crunching some numbers I have concluded that with my red one purchase I will be dirt poor and basically barely able to make it month to month off the bat. this is assuming Im not a sought after DP and working on films/commercials constantly..which btw, im not!
so heres my main question really.. I live in Orange County, CA 45min south of LA 45min North of downtown SD (about 20min from San Diego County).. Its a good central location, and I can readily get a camera to either in under 1.5 hours..
What am I looking at as far as potential renters. Will I be able to Rent my camera out at LEAST 2-3 days a month @ $500.00 -$800.00 day (red body, harddrive, nikon lenses, matte box, followfocus, evf?
I mostly want to just pay my red payments through rentals...

Hi Zakaree,
That is the million $ question on many peoples mind right now. What is your reservation no & how quickly will you pay off your loan?
By mid 2008 assuming 3000 + cameras built it may not be as easy, when the market gets more competitive people may not want systems with nikon lenses, so you may have to take a big price hit.
If you were to have problems making the payments, I am sure there will be a second hand market, but with all equipment the value will fall (at about the same time you can't rent your camera).

Edit I now see your resrevation 1015

Many of the rental houses only have a couple or three of bodies. It may be a good idea to approach those in your area, about sub-rental when they are setting up shoots with more than the number of bodies they have. This will play to their advantage since the return on investment is better for them on lenses and accessories than bodies, and this will enable them to put more stuff out the door.

Hi,
But bear in mind that you will probably only get 50% of the rental fee for the body only.

I think it will be the end of 2008 before rentals get a little soft, until then I think you will be able to rent at a premium...more than $800. I say that because if someone wants to shoot 4k and there aren't enough reds available for rent they will have to pay a premium or go to a much more expensive camera.

Hi,
Then one should aim to pay off the camera by the end of 2008 from the premium prices charged for rental.
