Still boggles the mind how small we are compared to the universe.. I think about the 30 odd million miles to mars (on a good day) and it pales in comparison to the distance voyager has gone... like 5 billion miles. I just heard that a guy in Russia is going to mine helium3 from the moon, we are truly in interesting times.

I had too much fun with this interactive site, I love this stuff. If they have the ability to measure the life of the entire universe already, just think of how much we will know in a 100 years. Isn't it nuts how quickly the sun becomes microscopic?

I've read crazy things about helium3 - sounds like a press release from the Jetsons. One Space shuttle load of Helium 3 would be enough to meet the US energy needs for 2 years, or something insane. Bad news for big oil - haha.

I've also heard that they are planning on using magnetism to transport the helium3 to earth.

What if something gets out of hand and the Earth gets overloaded with Helium and everybody starts sounding like the Bee Gees:ohmy:

There's a classic film on this theme called "Powers of Ten" made by the Charles and Ray Eames, with cinematography and effects done by Alex Funke, who went on to do great things including the miniatures for the Lord of the Rings trilogy

You can watch Powers of Ten here http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1172643527768412929&q=powers+of+ten
Great stuff. This also reminds me of this graffiti art I saw recently http://blublu.org/sito/walls/2007/big/mix001.jpg

Great job guys, I was going to post the info on "Powers of Ten" last night, but I had to get back to an edit. I have been a huge follower of Charles and Ray for many, many years. Great minds and great taste on this forum (form, function, design and drive). Everyone here should watch all of their films for many reasons... great way to refuel your "eye" and aesthetic.

Cheers,

Andrew

I got hooked on Powers Of Ten when I was a kid, every time I went to the National Air & Space Museum (Smithsonian) in DC. They had it looping in a teeny walk-in theater and I'd stay there until my parents dragged me out.
