One question: why isn't SCRATCH also available for the Mac?

The RedCine UI is so incredibly similar to that of Assimilate's product... Why not go "all the way"? :)

Because, among other things, Apple does not support NVidia cards with SDI, a very standardized interface for feeding both projectors and monitors. Not to mention that what cards they do support, they write custom drivers for.

what Mike said...

I wouldn't be surprised if there were several software development teams in our business paying close attention to any emerging options for developing for OSX.

I like MACs. They are elegant, robust and user-friendly. Everything an artist wants for his tools.

Perhaps one day, OSX will support a 10bit standard video signal format with universal broadcast industry support.

Will Display Port be the next possible vehicle for something like this?

not so far, but you never know...

Yeah, the question should go to Steve..apple is secretive about this. Iridas Speedgrade DI has Mac version, but because of no Nvidia support, you'll stuck on DVI. I think they will be the first one if finally Mac support Nvidia SDI.

From what I gather Assimilate is working closely with nVidia to squeeze every bit of performance out of the cards through the drivers. Apple wants to control the drivers for OSX so you wouldn't find the same type of support on that platform.

pardon my ignorance, but if it's for SDI output, could SCRATCH do it on a Kona? And still use the NVIDIA Quadro? Color uses the graphics card for grading and Kona for SDI output (or Blackmagic)

Which is one of the primary reasons it can't play 2K DPX files in real time. This approach requires sending data to the video card for GPU rendering, then back through the computer bus to the SDI card for output. This presents a significant bottleneck that doesn't exist if the output is directly from the video card (as it is with an SDI equipped NVidia card).

got it...actually Color cannot play anything at all in real time at this moment, but I can get about 20 fps 2K DPX, which is not that bad considering.

from what i gather its a path/driver issue. on osx you need to go thru the libraries which is where the problem is. whereas windows/others allow writing drivers directly to the card. im probably wrong but that's what i understand.
