Hello everybody,

I'm new here, i've been saving up to buy a red one camera but with all scarlet/epic releases and discussion. I'm a little bit reluctant and need to investigate further to make the best move.

What I understand from the scarlet release is that the red team wanted to produce new models that are more affordable, dual use (still and motion) and easier to upgrade.

By looking at the models, it's clear that 2/3'' models are less quality than the red one. But what about the other two? S35 and FF35

There is something else that cought my attention, the REDCODE 100 and 80 and the other numbers. How does that change the quality/performance of the camera?

I really need to know which ones of these scarlet models are less than the red one and which one matches the current red one?

merry xmas to all,
Ellie

Depends why you get the cam. If you need a cam now, get a R1. If you can wait 1-2 years then wait. R1 is an very good camera but scarlet will be smaller.

If you live outside the US, there are currency issues also. If you wait the usd exchange rate will get better.

Cheers

You make a good point about the currency issues!

But why wait 1-2 years? isn't scarlet going to be available from summer 2009?

also, is scarlet only smaller with all the good features of R1?

Yep summer 2009, but many people will be in line to get one, and it can take long before it's your turn. In short, scarlet will have about same to better resolution, but limited frame rate. Epic will have better to much better reslution and much variable framerate to highspeed.

Also keep in mind that R1 have build in sound and video ports. For scarlet you need to get extra modules. ..and you also can trade in your R1 and recive bonus (see Jims post)

Here is the info of all the cams.

The extra modules of scarlet aren't priced yet, right?

how much would it cost for the basic modules to start shooting with a scarlet? and how much does it cost to start shooting with the current R1?

That's correct, not priced yet. I think they said a basic Scarlet ready to shoot would be about $3750, compared to $3000 for the fixed lens with no modules.

Just a few quick points. I wouldn't say that the "it's clear that the 2/3" model is of less quality." RED has always maintained that Scarlet will be a "professional" tool, I don't see them producing something that is shabby or whatever was meant by "less quality." It is just a different tool. In some instances it will be the far better tool than a Red One, say shots that require a highly mobile Camera man or say 3D. It is also going to be a generation or two forward in the sensor technology as well. And don't forget it will be a more modular. That said it will have less resolution.

Secondly, knowing a little something about markets I would suggest no one make any financial decisions based on the statement that "If you wait the USD exchange rate will get better."

"If you wait the usd exchange rate will get better." - If anything, the USD will get much much weaker due to the increase in deficit and the fact that the US Gov is printing billions of USD, devaluating the currency...

That's what JanneJansson is saying - if the dollar gets weaker, that's better for camera buyers outside the US. A weaker dollar makes dollar-denominated prices cheaper in other countries because one unit of a foreign currency will buy more American currency than it did previously - assuming that foreign currency is not weakening at a similar or faster rate.

Depends what country you are in. If you live in Island, a R1 have become 9000% or so more expensive :/

If you live in some oil rich land in the middle east, it have become cheeper.
But at the moment many currencys are in a state of panic, and things will even out when all econimic bous packs start kickin in.

..I hope..

I can't see the Scarlet S35 and FF35 not being better than the Red. Those of us that got the Red 1 wanted to get in on the ground floor. Now that Red has already made a camera their next line will be far superior just from what they learned on the first go around. Better chip, better processor, better codec, more efficient power consumption, better ergonomics. That being said, I'd say that there's at least a year before anyone gets one of the new line. Can you wait that long?

[QUOTE=JanneJansson;351467]Yep summer 2009, but many people will be in line to get one, and it can take long before it's your turn.

Is there already a way to make reservation for Scarlet or Epic?

If you need a camera now and can afford the Epic upgrade, get R1 now.

If you cannot afford Epic in the near future, and don't need a camera right now, you want to wait for Scarlet. Scarlet FF35 is a modular, upgradeable 6K camera with a high-dynamic-range "Monstro" sensor. It is the way of the future.

And the 2/3" Scarlet will deliver more bang for the buck than any digital cinema camera in history.

Thanks everybody for the input,

I think i'll wait till the scarlet is out and maybe get S35 or FF35. Announcing the price of the modules will be very helpful in making early decisions, to everybody really, not only me.

Two more questions:

1. What's the difference between REDCODE 80, or 100 or 250 etc ..

2. What do I lose "practically" if i don't have anamorphic option in my camera?

Thanks,
