Hey, I wish I were more savvy with 3D models and such, but try to picture this:

Red one with a DSLR style grip and small high res electronic DSLR like viewfinder.

Why?

Well, having worked for years as both a DP and photographer, the one thing I've come learn about shooting candids is that your much better off using a still camera. They are smaller, and just plain old more discreet. Video on the other hand has always been such a boon. All the nicer pro level cameras are just beasts compared to a typical DSLR set up (I'm talking like 50-100mm lenses, not giant super fast telephotos). Lets not forget the traditional image quality disparity either!

From what I've seen, the Red one is nice and small, so a DSLR style hand grip and viewfinder *might* work well. I've never held one, so I can only speculate... Jim, Jarred, care to weigh in on this?

Last, but not least.... this could be fantastic for the Mini Red, again, pure shot in the dark, as no one outside Red knows much about this camera.

So what do you guys think?

i would not describe RED one as nice and small - infact i would say that most will find it larger then they think ... do a seach of the NAB photo's of it under this thread ...

Humm... Perhaps a secondary grip for the other hand.

What I would love to have is a way to hold it like a DSLR, that would be pretty sweet.

The prototypes at NAB weighed in at around 8-9lbs for the body, I think. Add a few more pounds for a lens... a little more for the RED DRIVE.

Damn. That's no SLR, man.

True, but use the CF card option instead. And even at 10 pounds, thats not too bad, I've held some pretty heavy DSLRs.

Chris, you didn't go to NAB did you? Red is almost the size of a shoebox, then add lenses. You will not be operating this like a DSLR

some interesting DSLR design points that could be applied to a RED MINI

adjust most settings without looking away from the viewfinder
lcd and viewfinder are very close together
you see almost all the field of view past the camera with your other eye
sits on a "human tripod" made of two hands and a forehead
rubbery ergonomic to the touch, fits in your palms
point and press for autofocus
manual override of autofocus
if it needs more stuff it is usually built down like old nikon F2 motors

I just hand another thought. Maybe if you put this grip and viewfinder on the camera, you could mount it to a mono pod. Sounds like it would be like carrying around a bigger sports photography rig, but still, that would pretty cool. I'm just tossing ideas out there for Red to chew on

NOW THATS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! Imagine having hand grip control over the camera! :w00t:

Wao... I am late to bring this topic up but it is nice that many people love the DSLR body for motion-picture camera.

I played around my 30D last night and think that should be a good "pocket" size if Pocket RED is designed in this way, one hand on the len (focus, filter, shutter) and one hand on exposure & record button. Then eyes on the LCD or VF (make camera closer to body would stablise the movement and reduce the weight).

If today 12m pixels DSLR can have both LCD & VF viewed in sharp focus, I see no reason to get a big bulk monitor for a Pocket RED.

And with the DSLR design, we can even operate steadicam much versatile because the cameraman is looking straight to where the camera is pointing at, rather then look at the monitor attached at the bottom of the sled. It is much safely, cheaper and easier to work with Steadicam because you can have everything in much compact design.

I hope too RED team will considered this DSLR body for making the Pocket RED.

And also, to have the LCD tilt up and down, just like some of the consumer digital camera such as Fujifilm S9100.

Please don't laugh if you think that is not "pro", but such LCD would really make a lot of shooting work easier. I would hope both my 5D & 30D have such feature (by the way the 5D LCD can't be used in shooting mode).

Red is more along the size of a large format camera and I think it will fill that niche in my arsenal. I have a little pocket waterproof Panasonic that is with me always, a Canon 20D for when I know I'll be taking pictures but want to be quick and mobile... and Red when it is worth hauling around the 10lbs that the stripped down model will be. That along with my Manfrotto 501 with carbon fibre legs would make for a relatively handy package for when I've serious about getting some good still images. Especially when we're looking to capture at 24fps.

This alone would be worth getting the CF option... an 8 GB card should hold a few thousand frames. I think I could get used to triggering off a one to five second burst of a scene with action in it and being able to choose from amongst the 24 to 120 frames.

It would be nice to be able to capture single frames at the full 4.5k resolution of the sensor but that doesn't look like it will be available?
