Hi all,

I am in the middle of doing a project shot on both panasonic P2 and RED. we are editing in AVID and have mixed the media. We are editing in DVpal resolution. Is there any way that you can just export the P2 material exclusively from the locked final cut for reimporting at a higher resolution later?

I also noticed that the P2 material AX as a clip name on the EDL whereas RED has the usual 8 or 16 character name any clever ideas?

Please no comments about checking work-flows before shooting, as I was not involved in the earlier stages of the production and am better at the RED side of things than the P2... as usual RED workflow falls into place as it has done in the last few feature films I have been involved in :-)

P2 does not have a TAPE MOB or ID for EDL's to use, but instead have a SOURCE MOB. We have been working on an XML to EDL for SOURCE MOBS but is not quite ready. The XSL itself could only list sources with MOB and not TAPE resulting in a P2 only EDL in your case. Let me check on where that stands.

Great... look forward to hearing from you about the XML to EDL solution...

think it might benefit many who have mixed media

Mixed media on its own is not an issue when there are tape named identified. It's the mix of file based with tape based. RED is essentially a tape based workflow by virtue of the ALE defining the tape name to be the same as the file name.

this I understand, but it would be nice to be able to extract only a certain format from AVID for manipulating and then maybe reimporting

So basically what I want to so is create an EDL with only the P2 material included and vice versa....

mixed format might be a better word maybe ?

Any news on the XSL for creating an edl with just P2 material?

thx

It is a side project, so it may take some time...

I think what Michael is saying is that P2 does not have a good method to conform via a tape workflow as it has no TAPE ID .. (rather a SOURCE MOB)

If you export the EDL as is and conform as if the whole project was RED, then you will likely get the RED stuff conformed with gaps where the P2 material would be, whatever the conforming app doesn't understand it will probably just ignore.. which is exactly what you seem to be asking for for the RED portion.. the P2 portion is another story as I don't know how the SOURCE MOB metadata from P2 is handled

Well I played around with it a bit yesterday, I think I might have found a solution.

Using filmscribe I created a tabbed list then looked at it in Open Office removing all RED Media, I then created an ALE in ALE that I relinked to all the P2 material, I have not tested the P2 import yet but I can't see it being that much trouble....

We will see... thx once again all who came with suggestions....

Michael I would love to test the developing xsl when ready, I am now into my 5th feature conform on RED and all have been a sucess and a steep learning curve....

See.. you're becoming an engineer... basically what you are doing with the TAB file is what the XSL will do. You could look at the XML file today from the scan list and search clips that have SOURCE ID's versus TAPE ID's as a way to filter R3D from P2 -

funny you should say that but that is what I am, a civil engineer in media at Stockholm's Technical University.... specialising in moving picture

Will update you if i find a smarter solution, am working on the xsl

I do get an XML but on saving I get the error Segmentation Fault in thread MainThread at adress 0x0...

Followed by a FilmScribe crashing!!!

I have gotten that crash myself on the Mac and engineering is looking into it for the next release in Feb. The XML is still created though...

I hope it is complete xml, will try on a XSL on it later to check...
