Viewsonic finally announced the launch of their 3d monitor and 3d projector.

Press release.

About blinking time, I thought I was going to turn blue!

Did not want to have to ship our cutting edge software with bulky CRTs!

Cheers,

Eric,

Eric Lange (VERAXYZ LLC)

Wow, awesomely cheap! $399 for the monitor and $1499 for the projector.
Now bring in a 3D Bluray player for a few 100 bucks and I'll never leave my home again. :)

Benni how you doing? Nice 3d forum!

Yeah it is crazy cheap.

A few years ago we bought Epson 9100 projectors and CYVIZ box for frame sequential to dual passive conversion, after major discounts it was still about $20k, but the advantage is of course if you need to show it to a larger audience then the passive polarized glasses are much cheaper than the ($800.00) a pair for CrystalEyes to view frame sequential.

Do you know if you can use one of Lenny Lipton’s Z screen on the DLP (so you can use passive eye wear) or do you need to buy shutter glasses from NVIDIA or CRYSTALEYES ?

That Z Screen stuff is over 10 years old isn't it?
And afaik the necessary eyewear is pretty light and I'm sure they're waaaay cheaper than $800.
There are also monitors that use 120Hz and additional in-monitor polarization changing so that you can use passive glasses. I forgot the name though.

Yeah I first saw the Z screen about twelve years ago and I know its few years older than that. However I thought that the new RealD system was just a Z-screen on an arm you swing in front of your monster cinema DLP projection system (maybee it’s the same but on steroids). The old Z-screens used to be about $5k.One of the monitors you may be referring to is the Zalman Trimon, but I don’t know if it is still sold or supported or bought out? The Zalman seemed to have a very low contrast ratio and very flat color.

The cheap glasses sound good, I wonder how they compare to CrystalEyes?

So Benni, you say, “so what’s the big deal about this monitor?”,

I’m glad you asked me that Benni…

The very big deal is that this will be the first single plane FULL RESOLUTION 3d capable monitor that is not a CRT. More over it is LCD. Other single plane stereo monitors require line interlace either vertically for lenticular displays, or horizontally for slow LCD based frame sequential stereo. These “older” LCD monitors therefore have only half resolution either in X or in Y.

For technical 3d visualization and higher end entertainment purposes half resolution is not acceptable, and so this new Viewsonic monitor in my opinion is the first technically capable LCD monitor in the world. For our VR/photogrammetry/stereo software old CRTs would have been the preferred choice, now we can use full res, nice color true 120hz frame sequential stereo on an LCD!.

I think this is very big news and will certainly accelerate many technical and consumer based 3d/S-3d applications, not just games or movies.

Apparently Nvidia is trying to become the big player in desktop 3D. They're building their own line of glasses:
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Nvidia-glasses-stereo-vision,6375.html

"They’ll work wirelessly with a USB infrared transmitter and the built-in batteries should retain enough power for roughly 40 hours between charging."

No word on the price yet. But they're aiming for mass market, so I expect it to be affordable for the regular geek.

Jan 8 2009, certainly a very big day for 3d, amazing we’ve been waiting for these things to finally “drop” for a really long time.

Its funny I saw a knock off of CrystalEyes last year, that were plastic molded liquid crystal shutter glasses that could be run through a dish washer (for public use applications) to clean them and the battery is sealed in, after about a year of use you just throw them out. They were I believe about $120-$200.00 but seemed a bit uncomfortable on the bridge of the nose. They did have good contrast ratio and wide viewing angle.

This is the thing that at we have been waiting, preparing and hoping for years. 2009 and 2010 is just going to be a mad scramble for S-3d media and tools, this is huge.

Any news on true native 1080P or more res 120hz stereoscopic? Have a feeling some companies are still holding back. Multiview Autostersocopic Displays are my favorite or Passive Stereoscopic. Nice find on Viewsonics products.

I've just read that the glasses are around 140€. Not as cheap as I expected, but I'm pretty sure prices will fall.

I know what you mean. The new Mitsubishi and Samsung 3d enabled Tvs enable frame sequential stereo by interdigitating the pixels. I.e. a checker board alternating pattern so its half res vertically and horizontally. I think this was done so that you could use broadcast bandwidth for delivering stereo content at home. The OLEDs /SONY have been looking promising but there are many things to solve for a cost effective production process of large OLED displays (I think chemical stability is still a bit of a worry). The display technology I really want to see and see for stereo is the SED technology from CANON and I think Toshiba. Patents and law suits have slowed the release and development of this technology. The SED’s as I understand work like a 1:1 matrix of solid sate electron guns. Should make absolutely astounding stereo. I’m sure Viewsonic has a 1080i 120Hz LCD up their sleve, but I’m sure other manufacturers are waiting for Viewsonic and Nvidia to test the market first before they jump in.

I have to admit I don’t get on very well with auto-stereoscopic displays, hope that a double horozontal resolution lenticular display comes out one day.
