View Full Version : New Red Design and Steadicam/Tripod Weight

I know the new design (which I like--it seems to be improving while continuing to provide custom config options aplenty) has not yet posted weights. But there does seem to be a big push to loose weight. While a visit or two to Jenny Craig couldn't hurt any camera, I have a question.

Steadicam Weight Issue:

As of NAB, it seemed an Archer was the way to go for a Red with a moderate kit. Since then, I have purchased an Archer and have been adding a 15 lb. boa sandbag until the Red arrives. I must admit to being worried I have purchased a $24,000 sandbag :usd: .

Exactly how much weight will Jenny be taking off the new Red accessories? And what in the world will I do with an Archer if I don't need one?

Tripod Head Weight Issue:

On a related note, I was going to go with an Oconnor 2060 for studio setups. (Thank the Lord I have not purchased that yet). Is that still the way to go? It seems with a weight reduction and the potential height adjustment, perhaps the 1030 is enough.

Be gentle. I'm vulnerable and sensitive today. :bye2:

I think I need a hug.

The Archer will still be an excellent way to fly your RED One, and you'll have upward room for the weight of heavier setups. Archers also re-sell quite well.

The 2060 is still a great way to go for heavy cine-style setups.

The 1030HD was also in the RED Tent, and Jarred was using one for mobile shots with a lightweight RED One setup on 4/3 when I visited RED to shoot DSLR stills of the 18-50 zoom on Boris for my Studio Daily RED at NAB, Part 1 article.

The 1030HD should be a great choice for lighter, mobile setups with RED One.

Smile...

Thanks for the hug, Steve. *sniff* I feel better now.

And the new weight reduction will really help those who are trying to scale down to minimum head requirements--renting a bigger head will be less necessary I would 'spect.

The Archer is great! Congrats to your purchase.
May I ask how long it did take from order to delivery for your Archer? Did you order an SE-package and which Vest did you choose? Standart or compact?

Yeah, Priyesh, the archer is an abslutely incredible piece of engineering. It increases our flexibility and we've already gotten some amazing shots.

It took about six days from order to delivery--we had a shoot that came up unexpectedly and the folks at tiffen were very good at bending over backwards to get it here on time. I essentially got an SE package minus the stand and leather vest (the LX is amazing enough for me--comfortable as can be).

I'll be flying a Viper and an HVX before the Reds arrive. Imagine having a Red on it. Ahhh.

I can't believe I'm "settling" for a Viper. Red sure has changed things.

Thanks for the info!
How do you record the Viper`s data?
Must be complicated doing something tethered on that light rig.

We're having a test session later with the rental company to figure that out. We'll probably have to have an AC float along beside, with a second first AC pulling focus. Heck, you can never have too many first ACs.

I'd love to figure a way to hang it on the steadicam though. I'll try to let you know how it goes. (If anyone has ever flown a Viper, I'm all ears.)
