Just came from Apple's Final Cut Studio 2 demonstration at the DGA theater in Hollywood and guess who was there . . .

Ted and Brian were there with the Macdaddy himself and showed (twice) Peter Jackson's Crossing the Line on the the huge theater screen. The "film" was played on an 8-core Mac Pro using Apple's new ProRes 422 codec at 1080p. It was played directly from the on-board hard drive (no server harmed in the process) via HD-SDI to an HD projector.

IT LOOKED FANTASTIC!!!

It looked great at NAB in 4K, but to see it on the huge screen at the
DGA theater was somehow even better.

Oh Yea, Ted and Brian looked OK too, I guess . . .

Wow, that's great. I was on the reserve wait list for that apple presentation..... Ahhhhhhh man.

At NAB I saw CTL 2x and I was thinking how cool it would be to see it on a big, big screen.

Glen, how different do you think it looked at 1080 vs the 4K?

Sam,

I was on the waiting list too. Turns out there was no waiting list.

The footage looked great. The image was a little bit softer but the huge screen really made a difference. It was as sharp as anything I've seen at the local Cinemark.

No waiting list? What, you just walked right in and there were plenty of empty seats?

(Sharp) Great to hear, thanks.

Makes sense. Having done a stack of trailers at DNxHD for film output, I have also come to the conclusion that ProRes or DNxHD should be enough for indies going to theatrical with a character-driven piece.

Thats a sobering as well as empowering thought.

I have signed up for the "Final Cut Studio 2 Tour." presentation in Oslo, Norway May 30th... I wonder if they will mention or even show anything from RED there. (probably not).

I WISH WE COULD GET RED T-SHIRTS!

I hope we can download and view the entire Crossing the Line in 1080p one of these days.

Good news, so with Apple’s new ProRes...you really think we can make a film out from there, I did not realize ProRes would be able to handle the big screen!

By the time I know, it will probably be too late...

but you can sign up here

In theory it seems like the same thing Glen Tracy mentions, but I doubt anyone from the RED team will come along to Norway at this time, and without a RED representative, I guess NO "crossing the line".
But I have a faint hope... It will be fun anyway!

Well, I'm probably leaving town that morning anyways. If Red was showing up I would deferentially stay. Thanks for the tip though, I may look into it.

Not the hard core Final Cut fan, but I guess now.. after the introduction of Redcode editing, it may be a solution. Got to get a solid Mac first ; )
