Questions questions..:innocent:
Has anyone used this Nikon zoom?

It would seem like the ideal zoom for RED documentary filming.

Ooooo I'm gonna spend so much on Nikon glass...:greedy: :pinch:

I've never actually used it, but I hear from professionals that this one's among the cream of the crop. Optically amazing, but flare can get real nasty when shooting into the sun. Perhaps Evin can tell you more 'cause like I said, I've never actually used it.

I've heard nothing but good things. I've got the 17-35, and the 80-200, and I'm looking at the 28-70 to complete the set.

Thanks, so the 80-200 is a good buy too huh...

Definitely. Get it quick, because i dont think nikon makes it anymore, they replaced it with the 70-200 f2.8 with no manual aperture control. I understand that its the same glass, just as sharp, but with VR and no manual aperture.

The 80-200 f2.8 is an awesome lens, sharp as hell, with great bokeh and close focus. Evin hasn't reviewed it, but I'd bet he'd vouch for it.

they've still got it on their website:

the 80-200 seems to have gone the way of the dodo though:wacko:
I've got my Nikon set all planned out but I feel that I should wait until someone has put them on a RED and filmed some tests:construction:

If I had the money I'd grab this one:

Looks like B&H still has some stock. Essentially the same price as the used one posted above.

nikon still makes the 80-200 AF, it's the cheaper alterantive to the 70-200 VR.
The 28-70 is an awesome lens, super shrp, but it's a slight varifocal design which means it will change focus just a bit while zooming, it even says this in the manual. So it will make a fine variable prime lens but not a true zoom for the Red. In addition the front element protrudes quite a bit when zooming so it's not very easy to use with a mattebox, although the scallopec hood it comes with may be able to be modified to solve this.

Thanks Evin. I was waiting for your learned opinion.. :clown2:
Does that mean that you can't zoom in to check focus? Or simply that you can't zoom in the shot? I ask because I never zoom in the shot, but when I'm filming documentaries (as I hope to be with the RED, to REALLY blow them dumb-ass Execs out of their overpriced seats), I really need to be running around with a zoom lens on the camera most of the time. So I can quickly get different shots with the same lens, as the scene plays out in real time.. you know the drill...
What do you think would be the ideal Nikkor zoom lens for this? It needs to be something in this sort of focal range I think. the 17-35 would also be useful, but still a bit too wide for Docs heading for TV.. I think.. Maybe I'm wrong... It woudn't be the first time :innocent:

Both, but using the EVFs 1:1 zoom or Graeme's magic focus assist makes this less of a problem I think.

Once the Birger electronic Nikon mount comes out then the 17-55 2.8 will probably be your best option. Until then the two lens combo you mentioned above is pretty sweet.

Thanks Evin. You're really doing a great job here :ninja:
Are you going to get your hands on the first RED's out of the workshop to see how these lenses perform on the camera, in comparison with the nice looking RED primes and of course Ziess & Cooke primes?:gun:

Ooooo I think I wet myself..:)

That's the plan, if I'm lucky.

You can get pills for that now:blush:
