Hello, I have a TVC coming up next week and the post facility is working with an AVID. I have only worked in FCP, so my plan for their workflow in Avid to keep it simple is the following:

SHOOT 4K RED AT 24 FPS- IMPORT TO REDCINE- RENDER FOOTAGE AT A MEDIUM RESOLUTION AND OUTPUT QUICKTIME MOVS- EDIT - FINAL GRADE- DOWN CONVERT TO 720X480 AND CHANGE FPS TO 30 IN AFTER EFFECTS.

Does this make sense?

I have not made any tests on an Avid as I don't have one close by, I'm meeting with the post guys this week to see if this works out.

Comments and suggestions appreciated...thanks!

Felipe

you don't say whether you are editing in 23.976 NTSC or 29.97 NTSC. Easier would be 23.976 NTSC:

1. Eport QT refs from REDrushes
2. Create ALE for 20fps NTSC via MetaCheater
3. Import ALE
4. Batch import QT ref as per step by step guide
5. Slect NTSC resolution of your choice: 1:1 (uncompressed), 2:1, 3:1, etc.

hi michael, does it works on PAL avid as well? and why a 24fps project the ALE's 20fps?

thx a lot...

If PAL, then the project type would be PAL 24p or PAL 25p depending on original frame shot. The MetaCheater step would be choosing PAL versus NTSC for the timecode conversion.

I'm adding to this thread because a director I work with is thinking about shooting with Red his next -low budget- feature film. There's no way I'm cutting a feature lenght project on anything else than Avid, so I've started to research the subject.
We're based in Europe, but the film will have a theatrical release. So I think we should go for 24fps - 25fps might be simpler, but the end result can be somewhat disappointing, especially for the music composer... What should be the workflow if we shoot 24fps? Sound will be taken separately, likely on Cantar - should we go for 24fps TC for the sound as well? Then, what sort of project should we go for? 24p HD? What can we use for monitoring? I have a Mojo SDi and an analog one, can it be used or should we give it to the assistant and invest in a Mojo DX (or Nitris DX if the production gives us the extra cash)?
Sorry, it seems that I'm firing in a lot of directions, but I want to have all the elements in my hands before we go out and do some tests.

The most straightforward method will be HD at 24fps with 24fps on the cantar and edit offline in DNxHD 36. You will need a DX series hardware for HD-SDI or HDMI monitoring - You can always use the second DVI output on the graphics cards with full screen play. But if you are making outputs to HD and SD, then go with the DX Mojo or Nitris.

That sounds pretty simple indeed. But in that case, can I use the Mojo SDi to monitor on a SD monitor? Probably not as it would have to run at 25fps, or am I wrong?

There will be no direct down convert from rue 24p into PAL from an HD project. That currently only works when the project is PAL to start with and 24fps. You can always switch the project tab to SD and monitor out that way with the Mojo -
