Hi

Basically I thought it would cool if I could get my AVID edits into Color. The edit house I work at has both and I didn't want to cost my company more money for a proper grade suite (the work goes elswhere for the moment). So I thought why not try to get these two to play nice. Well I'm not the only one and I wont be the last to try and get these programes to work together. The first stage was easy enough:

REDrushes to 2K REFS + AVID ALE

ALE INGEST OF REFS TO DNX HD

OFFLINE EDIT

Now the cool stuff. If you want to use MonkeyExtract to create a new edl and render your media thats the best way to go, the new version rules. I did that but accidently screwed up my render settings so the edl came in with no media. Idiot.

So I went to the RED website for some reason and downloaded the Red Final Cut Studio installer, it was new, I didn't have it so I installed it. I restarted color and brought in the edl.

BRAINWAVE

I browsed the source media directory to the folder I kept my .R3D files in.

Ahhhhhhhhh

Working sequence. From Avid To Color. Yep. Pretty happy.

Are you saying that without any tricks you can just export an EDL from Avid and do a conform in color? That's huge.

Yeah pretty much.

There are limitations however.

1. I have only done a very short test, 4 shots in total. This works but obviously I'm gonna have to do a bigger test.

2. Color has imported the edl but then conformed all shots to the first .R3D file in the source media directory on more than one occasion. When you attempt to relink media it does'nt let you specify which .R3D file you want. Color may support .R3D natively but its conform features leave ALOT to be desired.

3. The workaround that I tried is to link instead to the 2K QT refs you export with your ALE with REDrushes. This works every time. As these files are refferences to the actual 4K media you seem to keep all the colour information. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Apart from these it works like a dream.

I just tried it and it works! Then I remembered why I didn't like Red footage in Color the last time I checked... Half res only is very noticeable in HD when shooting tungsten and whitebalancing: Noise-o-rama.
I will continue to use Redcine in my workflow as usual.

If anyone has tried this method and has had problems or has found a defect. (I still cant get Colour to recognise handles from a MonkeyExtract edl, no slip edits to correct a loose edl here i'm afraid) please let me know. I know that this workflow would be useful to alot of people right now not just me so i'm eager to get it down.
