That's easy - http://www.diyhifisupply.com/diyhs_Le_Club_Hifi.htm Tell them I sent you. Chuck, so you like tubes! Are you using a tube amp at the moment? I've been all tube for nearly 20 years - wow, is it that long! This is my first 300B amp though and I'm loving it, although one of my speakers died, so I'm on a quest to a) get that one working again, new drive units are on their way, and b) eventually build new improved ones. Should be fun if I ever find the time.

I find listening to music via tubes, from vinyl, goes well with a good single malt :-)

I'll redesign my Sanford & Son camera. I wasn't going low tech enough. I'll scrounge around for some old TV tubes. :)

Truer words have never been spoken...

I can't afford tubes myself, but I do have a friend with an absolutely amazing setup. He has an Audio Research tube amp with a set of 7 foot tall custom built Kindel speakers. They have about 8 drivers in each one, I believe with crossovers feeding them all separate frequencies. He has a killer turntable as well, I can't recall the brand but it is outstanding...

I just got an old Revox for free not too long ago. It sounds amazing.

MP3 fans will never understand the beauty of vinyl. Pretty sad really... Many of these kids don't even know what a record is... Mine do though:)

My daughter is 2 and a half and she knows what vinyl is, what a record player is and, most important, never to touch tubes - they might be hot - ouch.

:)

Mine is four, and she finds the records very interesting, but doesn't care at all about CD's. Makes me proud! She has her priorities in order...

Do you have any suggestions for a nice but affordable phono preamp that can handle MC cartridges? The phono section on my amp is bad, left channel goes out a lot. I want to be able to convert some stuff to CD, and more importantly just be able to listen without the annoyance of the left channel cutting out. I still have a turntable with a MM cartridge, but it sounds pretty awful in comparison to the Ortofon in the Revox.

I had looked at a lot of different things, and actually was using my Digimax microphone preamp as an input and then applying RIAA EQ in Pro-Tools, but it was a pain and never sounded quite as good as it sounds just running thorugh the preamp in my Sansui AU-D11 MkII. I suppose I could have the Sansui fixed, but would just like a nice little preamp I could use to run the signal into whatever gear I want including other amps with no phono section.

Cheers,

Tim

That's great. I remember a few years back breaking out my vinyl and turntable to digitize some out of prints to my computer. My daughters at about 8 and 12 had never seen a record or record player before. They were amazed.

There's just nothing like vinyl, sonically and aesthetically. I have about 2000 records, ranging across the spectrum. I have some really nice rare stuff...

I also have two albums that I recorded out on vinyl. That was just such a cool feeling knowing that I had actually recorded something that was released on vinyl. I had never thought I would see the day. Absolutely amazing...

Mostly old jazz releases from the Savoy label. I still don't think they are available yet on disc.

TimothyD

Ah, I have some interesting old jazz myself. Most of my out of print stuff is very oddball though. My prized posession is the album Wiser Dread on Nighthawk Records, from 1981 I believe.

The two albums that I did that came out on vinyl were jazz, as are many of my recordings.

My master's thesis was an improvised jazz concert DVD that I produced, shot, recorded, mixed, edited, did the DVD authoring, etc. It will be released soon, but so far no plans to release the sound mix on vinyl. I hope they do though eventually.

Excellent. I'd like to hear some of it. I'm a jazz guitarist. I think there are quite a few people in this industry who are musicians. You can hear some of my recordings at my soundclick site:

Many covers of jazz standards but also some original compositions.

Thanks Graeme, I hadn't heard of that one before. At $90 euro I would guess that is less than $150 american? I'm not sure what the conversion is. I'll have to look into that some more. Thanks!

Getken,

I'll PM you to let you know where to check some stuff out:)

Absolutely, I love the community on this forum. So many intelligent people, and all just as addicted to tech as I am:)

I love whiskey too by the way, but rarely have been able to afford the good stuff.

I did have a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label that had been sitting in a basement for 10 years one time though. So it was, what, 22? I got it for my 22nd birthday from the bassist from my old band, so it was a very appropriate gift. It was delicious, I made it last a long time.

Cheers,

Tim

another good, compact and affordable pre is Lehmans Black Cube. I used it for two years until I upgraded to pass lab xono.
I am on tubes as well, all BAT with some NOS siemens tubes from the 60's. Sometimes the sound is just better than in our concert hall.

I play my vynil on a cheap Numark turntable, with a ROLLS 3.25"x2"x1.5" phono preamp that sounds great-nice and clean for under $60. Sexy looking thing too: http://www.zzounds.com/item--RLLVP29
I've had mine for more than 5 years now.

Cool,

Thanks for the info folks. There was one I had read a review on a while back that looked like it was designed by Red, only it was not black. It was an aluminum case with fins if I remember correctly. I think it listed for about $350 or so. It got a good review, but I didn't have the money to pick it up an lost the link to the review. If I can google it I'll post the link in case anyone is interested.

I want to get one that sounds very nice but is affordable so I don't wish I had used a better pre to do the conversion to digital later and end up wasting time doing it again.

Cheers,

Tim

I'm using a Motu 828 mk II to bring the analogue into the digital world and it works great. Then I'm using Soundtrack Pro to do the odd touch-up on the waveform if needed.

My other tables by the way are a Technics SL-1400P, and Luxman, which I don't recall the model number of off hand. I also don't remember the model of the Revox off hand, but it is sweet, especially for free.

BTW, there's nothing wrong with Numark. They are an excellent value.

I knew some DJ's back in the day that swore by them and would always buy them instead of 1200's. My 1400 is an automatic version of the 1200 BTW, it has a lot of sentimental value since it was my dad's and has been with me all my life. But damn, that Revox sounds much nicer (thanks to the Ortofon cartridge.)

Cheers,

Tim

Motu's are great devices, and don't have the artifical limited life-span of Digidesign's gear.

I had bought my G4 MDD 1.25 dp instead of a G5 so I could keep using my Digi001, and a month later they discontinued support for the 001.

Now I have a Digi002r (rack) and they just discontinued it, I'm wondering how long PTLE support will last. Probably not long knowing Digidesign, but I'll be damned if I buy another one of their products if so. I'll probably go Motu next.

I do like my Presonus Digimax though. It is a very clean and accurate preamp (8 channel adat optical out into the 002). I like it a lot, and have had it since about the time they were released. It has been a great workhorse.

Now don't get me started on microphones:)

Hi Graeme,

Nah, no tubes now adays. More like forty years ago. My Hammerlund HQ-180 Ham gear and a Dynaco HiFi amp. lol
Been designing a pair of monitors for my friends home recording studio. Going to use Hi-Vi Research F8's and Morrel 29's. Going to let Madisound design the crossover on their "Leap" software.
I take it from that web site your amps are the mono block "Ellas" lucky you. Any how here's to big finals!

Valves forever,

Chuck

Nope, Ladyday 91, monoblocks, 300B. I've always wanted a single ended 300B amp, so finally I saved up enough to get one. Just running it of my iPod at the moment as the Cole MM/MC and Django have not yet arrived. Should be great when it all gets here.....

I'm working on designs for new horn loaded loudspeakers. I'll try and post plans when I've got a bit further with them, but way too busy to do that at the moment.

Horn loaded = efficency=low wattage requirement=joy!

Graeme Nattress
05-17-2007, 06:31 PM
Yes, I think I get about 103db/w/m which means 9 watts can go to around 112db, which is scarily loud for a home hifi. Sounds good too. The new drive units shipped today from the UK, so should be able to get things up and running properly when they arrive.

At $90 euro I would guess that is less than $150 american?

Just type this in the Google search box:

90 euro in usd

And it will tell you what that is with the current rate.

You can do all sorts of weird conversions with Google. Temperature, speed, some math stuff, even stuff like this: CLICK HERE (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=1.4+euro+per+liter+in+usd+per+gallon&btnG=Search)

And yes, that is the current price here in Holland....
