View Full Version : My new Creation - Better than RED ONE

Jay A. Kelley
05-17-2007, 09:46 AM
After nine months of developement, I am sitting here awaiting the final delivery of something better than Jim's camera (And even he will agree with me!)

His name is Lucas Samuel Kelley. I feel a lot like Jim cause he's not here yet and I don't know exactly when he will arrive, but it's close!

Seriously we're in the hospital room, and things are moving along. I've been with all of you for so long I felt it would be cool to share this. I will give progress reports of our newest camera operator as they become available.. Something new to obsess on.. Unless a Mod boots my thread (Please don't).

Talk to you all soon!

Jay
PS: Sorry guys, any design changes on this will have to go unanswered.... We've past that point!

Write something nice, or cute and I will read the posts to Diana (My beautiful wife) and give her a reason to smile while she finishes the final touches on our son!

Hi, thats cool, we need a lot of new REDusers, so I hope you will get not just one but a couple of them :nerd:

It is a very special moment, with a lot of nature power in it, which is hard to control as it is hard to control tears and fear and luck and destiny.

Wish you all the best.

Thank you Daniel.. It's wierd you would write first since we have not COMPLETELY decided on the middle name and "Daniel" is the other choice.
We need to figure this out as we're running out of time!

Just got back in.. Diana is not in the good mood she was a couple hours ago (I seem to be getting in more and more trouble, and yet I am just sitting here!)
Nevertheless, your posts so far have been great.. Every few minutes she says "Read me another one" I read her one every contraction..

I worry her contractions will out pace the posts.. Then I am a dead man!

Nope.. This will be my 2nd and FINAL child.

OK, some advice!
Don't sweat the color! Skin tone, can lean blue at first, but after 24 hours or so, it should look better than film!
Audio will be weak. But take comfort in that. Soon enough, you'll be wishing for the mute button. And a 7.1 home theater setup won't be able to compete with the way it can pump out perfectly pitched screams -- especially once it's autonomy is more developed. Frequency will definitely be biased for the 3k and higher range.
Get lots of tissues and cleaner, your model will tend to get dirty quickly and often.
And recharging is almost an hourly operation at first. After a while, the NiCd-like voltage collapse will be replaced by the more moderate decline of a gell-cell. Then, it'll inexplicably get some sort of thermonuclear energy hook-up, and you'll never be able to keep up.
It self-updates its ROM, but you have to do a lot of programming, too. Fortunately, a lot of the code required comes in cuddles and simple sounds. Work on the "da-da" and "da-dee" combinations as much as possible, since it will dirve your wife mad if those become its first utterings ;)
Welcome to the best part of your life . . .

CONGRATS JAY!!!

You probably already know, but get a trash can with a lid. It's funny how babies like to throw away things like shoes, remote controls, important mail, you name it.

I once was looking for my shoe when my daughter was about 2, and jokingly asked her if she had thrown it away like she had done with my TV remote. She started laughing uncontrollably, luckily there was nothing nasty in the trash can and the shoe was on top. Just barely made it to class on time that day:)

Kids rule, they are the best part of life IMO. Nothing cheers me up like spending time with my kids. Except maybe spending time with my wife practicing for making more:) Bada-bing...

Best of luck, and don't let the damn nurses keep you from touching your baby. They pulled that on me and I swear I was the last one in the hospital to get to hold her. I will always regret not telling them to get out of my face and let me hold my crying baby while they poked and prodded her...

Peace,

Tim

Actully Diana is trying to sleep.. Seems to be the best way to move things along.. We put in a spinal block and that has helped things a bit, but right now everone is quiet trying not to upset the Mom to be.

I am sad to see the Mods played the rules and threw the thread into off topic as fast as they saw it. Always a shame when technology and "following the rules" goes before life and friendship. It hurt because not as many of my friends on here will see this now. Very sad.

Congrats Jay...

Having had three, I know what you're going thru. And BTW, you're comment about only having two... that's what I said when all of a sudden - oops - another one came along... and she was a gift from God and the most mellow and lovable of the three. I couldn't understand it because I had the lens cap on! But everything happens for a reason.
I always say they are the best three productions I ever created but at the same time - they are individual people all their own and I am just blessed with the job of guiding them through life.

Give my best to your wife... and may the labor gods be kind to you.

PS - Probably best not to talk about RED during labor..

aloha,

Keith

You should record your face when the baby arrives and then do the same when your Red One arrives. If the kid doesn't get the better look then you can bet your wife will be sending the camera back so your little'un doesn't grow up feeling neglected :)

Seriously though, many congratulations and all the best!

Congrats on your up and coming (hopefully quickly coming) focus puller.
(every one has to start somewhere and believe me, if he can reach it, he will pull it)

My youngest of four just took his first steps this week(nothing cooler in the world)

Don't let that first diaper scare you, It will probably seem as though little lucas has been eating road tar for the last 9 months. While pretty gross I assure you this is quite normal. Be prepared

Its a fun ride. Welcome to Daddy-O. Congrats and all that.

Don't rush the middle name, find one you can easily pronounce when frustrated
our youngest was five days old before we finalized his full name.

I am divorced from my first wife but when she was in labour with my son my mother came to visit and every time the graph on the machine connected to my wife shot up indicating a contraction pain (or whatever) my mother would say "Oh look that must be sore its really high that one" Its one thing to get a pain it is quite another to be told your getting one as well.

Well at least i did not have to suffer the moods just my mother:)

Good luck and congrats in advance

It's 3:39pm here.. Diana is doing well. We've begun taking bets as to when Lucas will arrive. I am guessing between 5-6pm.. Losers make dinner!

Woman giving birth in 4k.. I bet mister Dunbar would LOVE that online..

Of course it would be the last thing I ever shot... Dead camera operators tell no tales.

I have read all the notes to Diana.. She LOVES them.. Keeps asking me: "Is there another one? Read me another one!"

Even though this is our second and I think some of you believe it's our first, we don't care.. We LOVE the letters and advice.

It's funny, she's asking all sorts of questions about the camera now.. Not cause of the camera, cause of all of you!

And during LABOR no less.

Jay and Diana

Jay A. Kelley
05-17-2007, 01:52 PM
Looks like we're all gonna lose our bets.. Don't know about some of you, but in the hospital I am in, the room the mom is in is very nice and empty and open.. Then when it comes time for baby the room is REMODELED in about 10 min and turned into a full blown high tech delivery room (Which of course, is the most interesting part to me). They do not do this until they are close.

Well, they are doing it...

Oh shit.....

So I THINK we'll be having a baby here in an hour or so.. Time to get off this thing.. I'll be back with a report afterwards.

For those of you kind enough to take part in this and act interested, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

If you're REALLY interested, check out Window Water Baby Moving on Criterion's by Brakhage DVD set. It was shot in 16mm (so maybe around HD res?), and it's a really beautiful little movie that Stan Brakhage shot (with his wife Jane's help, of course :) ) of the birth of his oldest child.

Edit: Not for the squeamish, though I suppose birth itself isn't for the squeamish either.

For a really long time when I was reading this thread I thought you were building a camera... I actually thought you were going to name your camera Lucas Samuel Kelley. I thought "that's a weird name for a camera". I thought you had somebody else making it for the past nine months and they were going to deliver it to you. Then I thought "why is he in the hospital? Oh well, I'll just read what people have to say". pixelchef said "Jay, is this your first?" I still thought it was a camera. I saw the Daniel as the middle name discussion, and I thought nothing of it. I was reading all the congratulations and then I thought I should read the rest of your post...

OH! THEY'RE HAVING A BABY! Awww... Not even the RED ONE can beat babies!

Where does a guy get up the guts to have kids. You can stick me on a crane overhanging a building, hang me off the side of a mountain to get a shot, I've shot inches off the ground out the back of a ford ranchero/stock car/ camera car going over 100mph but the thought of having kids makes my tummy hurt.
