35mm Lomo Anamorphic Square Front Lens
T4

Build 18 4k ANA
RedRushes to transcode.

Bought the lens because of my love of Solaris and several other movies shot in Sovscope. We did take about 4 minuets to grade the footage to as close to Solaris as we could from memory.

Gorgeous.

Have you directly compared the square front to a round front?

No, I bought square front lens because I wanted the actual lens type used by Vadim Yusov in Solaris....Sergey helped my find a lens that was pre 1972 so the lens coating should be the same.

I'm a sucker for anamorphic sci-fi.. Solaris, Logans Run etc.

If I run into a round front I'll do a side by side comp... until them I'll be hunting to complete my square front set.

Looked very cool. Almost makes me want to get one.

The more I see, the more I like the look of the square fronts more.

Hi! :)
I see that the size of frame on Lomo lenses are 16 x 22mm... Is that sufficient vs the s35mm that is 24.4 x 13.7 or are the old standard lenses just 35, not s35 compatible?

I really like this lomo look...curious about the difference from the round fronts. We take delivery on a set of round front Hawk Anamorphics soon so I will be able to share some results then.

Why drop so much money on what will be a set of expensive lenses when the RED already records more pixels then are usually recorded? Wouldn't it make more sense to shoot 4K and just crop out to the anamorphic dimensions? I know that DVFILM can take a normal image, process (squeeze) it to anamorphic then record it; I assume that the more expensive labs could as well.

Am I missing something?

Hi Bob

My main reasons...

The focal length of anamorphic lenses is different from sherical ones. The anamorphic element changes the horizontal angle of a lens by a factor of 2, but leaves the vertical angle untouched. So in fact you have the characteristics of two focal lenses combined in one. - Excerpt from cinematography.com... (thanks Max Jacoby for your synopsis of anamorphic lenses. Anamorphic flair is unique and a big part of why I make films today... I don't even like flairs... I just remember how the flashes of light played off the robot in Logan's Run or the sparks flashing on the spaceship in Solaris.... in a nutshell just good memories that I later came to find out were all created with anamorphic lenses.
