I searched the forums and couldn't find anybody addressing this. Is there any reason that the Red One couldn't offer a gigabit ethernet connection for offloading to a RAID setup? Since it offers a bandwidth of 1000 Mbit/s, there doesn't seem to be any capacity issues there. The nice thing is that you could build your own cable to run from the camera to the computer/RAID setup for very little money. Imagine being able to shoot and have the data sent up to 100 meters away to a relatively cheap home-built RAID system. There is a company called Reel-Stream that is building a "Hydra" unit for the Panasonic HVX-200 that is set up with this sort of ethernet system. Is there any possibility of RED adopting a ethernet adapter in the future?

I agree - it should have an IP address and an ethernet jack. If it runs linux (?) it shouldn't be hard to add and NICs are cheap. This capability would allow some very interesting camera control and transfer capabilities.

I'd like to see ethernet for control capabilities... Hey, WiFi would be best since I don't want to be tethered. Onboard recording options all provide everything we need except for options only available via the uncompressed RAW port -- but gig-E won't help there, we need 10g-E for that.

If I'm going to go through the brain damage to record to an external RAID and be tethered all the time, I'll just go for the RAW port option and get the best of all capabilities. Why bother going tethered when you'll only be able to record the same stuff that is already available to all forms of on-board media?

It has already been said that nothing prevents you from using a WIFI card in the provided SD Card slot, so WIFI remote control might be possible already (providing someone does a program for that...)...

Gigabit ethernet at 1,000Mbit/sec has a theoretical max data rate of 125MB/s. Since uncompressed RAW data rates will potentially reach up to 1GB/s at high frame rates... how would this be helpful?

Maybe I'm misinterpreting you?

No Ethernet connection on the RED-ONE. The RAW port option uses 10GigE protocols to deliver the uncompressed 2540p 12 bit RAW data over fibre optic link, but there is no low bandwidth generic IP port on the camera. Local storage using REDCODE plus wireless remote control of course is available.

I guess I had looked at the data rates for shooting 2K on the Panasonic and didn't take into consideration the much larger quantities of data the RED would need to push through, especially at higher frame rates or shooting 4K. I'm used to shooting film, so I am trying to learn about all this digital stuff and I got my MB/s and Mb/s mixed up. My question seems a bit stupid now...

Can anyone tell me more about the fiber line that runs from the data port to the RAID system? How long can that cable be? Is it expensive cable? Hard to wrangle? Etc.

RED hasn't stated the specs yet, but it looks like 10Gbit ethernet over single-mode fiber. The fiber cable can literally be a few kilometers (mile or two) long. So in practical consideration, there's really no length limits. Right now bulk fiber cable is pretty cheap... Belden single-mode in PVC jacket is about $185 for a 1000ft spool, the duplex (two fibers, zipcord arrangement) is about $325 for 1000ft. And you just need your connectors. Depending on which connectors we'll need, that could range from about $5 each to $150 each, depending on type and quality / brand.

Stuart, may I use a Datadirect 's solution to connect to RED one in my Digitainment Studio in HK ? ( http://datadirectnet.com/s2a9550.html )
