I am looking for anyone else interested in RED in Utah. Anyone out there?

I think there are at lease 5-6 known reservation holders in UT mostly concentrated in slc and the outlying areas.

And there was also this discussion a while back: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=587

Where are you located?

According to the Red user map, it looks like he has #63 - however, the map also indicates he is living in a cave in the mountains east of provo...So maybe Thor Wixom (#137) is the better candidate to host a party.

One way to make fry sauce is to mix ketchup and mayo, and sometimes (depending on the food joint) throw in some bbq sauce. Get the proportions right and you can't taste a difference... :)

PS I'm scarred for life from too much jello salad...

Cave in the mountains of east Provo? Where did you get that? :) My home is in the South East corner of Provo, as in about four minutes from downtown Provo.

However, we will probably have the camera set up at our office on University Parkway in Orem as soon as it arrives. And yes, party at our office! Around Sept 15th according to the schedule.

RSVP if you are interested in coming to play. And the camera will be available for rent.

Red Dudes! Come hang out at Jerseys in SLC and let's talk Red. If you've got a RED ONE in your hands... Bring it.. You will be the envy of EVERYONE there! Gibby, if you're in town, feel free to stop by. If not, book a flight and bring your LART test results with you! :)

Come join the MPAU at Jerseys Sports Grill, for an evening of networking. Give yourself a little exposure, and come meet Utah's film industry at the next "Gaining Exposure".

When: Thursday, September 13, 2007 - from 7pm till 9pm
Where: Jerseys, 677 South 200 West, Salt Lake City
What: Network, Eat, Drink
Why: Because the last one was so much fun!
Who: Anyone involved in Motion Pictures
How much: The cost of your own food and drinks
RSVP: Please! http://www.mpau.org/eventRSVP.php?event=exposure20070913

This month, at the request of many, we've moved the event to Thursday night. Also, our gracious hosts at Jerseys have given us the half of the restaurant, along with a DVD player and a big screen for whatever we like. If you'd like to share a couple minutes of a demo reel, please mail a DVD copy (max 3 minutes, and I reserve the right to edit) to:

Kyle,

I plan to be there. I will bring either my brother (production partner) or my wife, or maybe both.

I read that members can bring clips. I'd like to do that. Is there somewhere I could email a .mov or .wmv as a pre screener?

I wouldn't mind lugging an A1U up with an HDV clip instead of going the DVD route. Will the TV be HD compatible?

Thanks for your time, and I look forward to meeting everyone.

Thor,

At this point, there won't be a DVD player/TV for tonight. No one ever submitted any footage in time for me to compile a DVD. I don't know anything about the AV setup other than its a projection system with a DVD player hooked up. I suspect the owner of the bar doesn't know more than that about it either.

In any case, by the nature of the event, you won't have an opportunity to address everyone there, and we're not going to interrupt everyone from their discussion everytime someone wants to put up a reel (lame, I know).

The idea was to submit a DVD clip/reel/etc, and I would combine all of them into a single DVD that I could loop throughout the night as background material while everyone chats, and eats, and drinks. No introductions, no explanations, just something to look at.

I won't be there tonight..hope the "RED-In" goes well though!

I do go to Utah every autumn to shoot fall colors in the canyons. I've spent a ton of time in Utah over the years: shooting, exploring, ghost towning, camping, etc. It's one of my favorite places in the world to visit - and autumn is my favorite time there.

Sidenote #1: I was born in Utah and when I was four my family moved to California.

Sidenote #2: I'm a graduate of BYU

Sidenote #3: I hope to visit Utah the first week of October sometime. When I confirm that, I'll post on this thread when I'm coming and hopefully I can hook up with you guys

C-ya!

Thanks Gib,

Good luck with the project, and let's try and hook up in October. The social is becoming a monthly event, so our next one will probably be the 14th of Oct. If you're in town for that one, cool.. If not, we'll have to organize a little RED-only get together...

Mmrmr... BYU... but you can't argue about the Y's film school... (My Dad worked at BYU MPS as a line producer when I was 8... he tried to get me to go to school there, but it never happened-- school of life for me).

Hey kyle is the guy in your avatar praying or delivering a kung fu chop?

Funny you ask... In fact, its a kung-fu chop in the full-size version. But in the crop, it looks like I'm praying. The avatar got me the nick "Irish Jesus" on thelot.com. The picture is actually a portrait of me, done by a brilliant artist (www.bryanlarsenfineart.com), as a white-elephant gift for my wife for Christmas last year.

Looking forward to meeting everyone tonight!

It was a little crazy, estimates were at around 140 people. Hopefully you guys were able to talk about the RED network... I would have much rather talked RED than anything else last night, but... well... duty called.

It's why we do those events... Most everyone in Utah is "Out of the loop" so-to-speak. Lot's of little circles ("puddles" we call them) of friends and associates, most socially or geographically isolated from the next, not knowing about all the other people that are right next door. Utah has a large, local film community, we're just fragmented in it. Hence the need for the social. Hopefully it was fun, entertaining, and you were able to expand your social circle.

We'll have to go down and visit Jeremy's cave in the next couple of weeks, and talk business then, when we can actually hear what each other has to say. :)

Steve Freebairn

I was there, and so was Strongbad_2z, but we left shortly after we got there because of some other business that came up, but it would be really cool if we could get a Red only meeting sometime soon. I asked a few people if they knew about Red and they all looked at my like I was crazy (they were mostly actors).

I asked a few people if they knew about Red and they all looked at my like I was crazy (they were mostly actors).

It's too bad we each other. Chris was proudly wearing his RED shirt, and Thor had Red pamphlets in hand. Jeremy was packing around his Macbook, with some footage no doubt. I figure about 1/2 of the people in attendance last night were actors. It's to be expected. We (MPAU) estimate there are about 5000 active film people in Utah. Of those, we figure about 500 are NON-actors. So, it is especially important for us non-actors to network and keep connected, lest we drown under their numbers.

Steve Freebairn
09-14-2007, 11:13 AM
Sorry we had to take off. We ended up buying 2 of 3 52 inch TVs that are going to be displaying one huge video banner wall in a restaurant. (with red footage once we get our camera in December). It was exciting walking out with 1080p hdtvs. I'd definitely be up for a Non-actor meeting.

Anyway, it was good to meet Jeremy and Kyle. Rfo, we'll have to hook up in the future. I was surprised how many people I knew at the gathering.

Seriously, though, I'm planning to have an open house at my place when I get my camera. I'm sure my wife will be up for entertaining. She usually is. Maybe a potluck and a byob. Maybe some strippers? JK!

In case you all missed our announcement on the Red Users forum... We have our Red. Actually had it for almost two weeks now. We had planned to have a formal open house, but as it turns out, we already have a 6 week rental lined up for a Fox SciFi feature in Mexico, starting on Nov 10.

So, if you all want to come down to Orem and play with the Red, next week is your only chance until after Christmas. We are setting aside Thursday morning (Nov 8), at 10am. Come on down and play.

Very shortly I'll be moving my studio from the California Central Coast to the mountains of southwest Utah. Then I'll be producing/directing a really cool new television series. I'll naturally be looking to network with hybrid-style Red camera shooters and editors who are based in Utah, southern Nevada, northern Arizona, and western Colorado. If you live in those areas, work with Red cameras in a mobile hybrid style, and want to network, please email me at: steve (at) cut4 (dot) tv

I'll still be doing my long-travel work around the world too...but flying for that out of Las Vegas now instead of Los Angeles.

Fun stuff ahead...

hey Steve,

where in Utah are you going to be based? My brother is up in Ritchfield, UT, and always has a spare room for me, if you guys need any help.

My new studio will be in the mountains of southwest Utah, between St George and Cedar City. I don't seek walk-in customer traffic for my studios, because they're setup to service mostly my own productions. So for equipment security reasons, I never divulge online the exact studio location - the same as I didn't with my Central Coast studio location, etc. When I produce big projects and need larger studio or edit bay space I simply go to L.A. or sometimes Las Vegas and rent the space I need for those projects. Then I go right back to my rural facilities where I can enjoy my lifestyle and work :)

We'll be doing a lot of outdoor mobile production work in Utah and the surrounding states. We'll need some help from time to time, so drop me an email, and tell me about your experience and skills. If you're new to the business, no problem, I bring in production assistants regularly to work with us.

Very cool Mark. Yes, Artbeats is one of my stock representatives. As you know, they're very good at what they do. Hey everyone,

I'm new to this thread but far from new to Utah. I'm living in LA now but frequent back and forth since family and many connections are still back there. I shoot and do DIT work mostly. Utah certainly is stunning. I've traveled through southern Utah since I was a little kid. My mother now lives in Torrey (with Capitol Reef as it's back yard) and she was telling me the once in eight years flower was in bloom going from Torrey to Moab where a barren moonscape goes from desert to a blanket of yellow and purple (only if the conditions are right and there's enough water). I didn't see it this year but I did, well, about 8 years ago. Don't know if anyone else got to see that but it is quite the phenomenon. Anyways, I'll most likely be back in early August to shoot three projects on Red. It'd be great to connect with you all sometime though.

Hey guys, I'm gonna be in Moab all of Sept and at Lake Powell all of Oct if anyone wants to get together for some filming? I'll be using a 3-axis camBLOCK motion-control dolly for most of my timelapse shots, and an MX for the regular shooting.

I'll probably start shooting around Aug 29th, perhaps trying to tackle delicate arch straight away.

I'd love to swing by, but will unfortunately not be in Utah at the time. Best of luck, Southern Utah is one of the prettiest places on earth.

Better get permits for arches, I got kicked out once. Are you gonna have the motion control at Delicate Arch? Is quite a hike with all that gear. BTW I'll be shooting in Powell in September, mostly stock lifestyle stuff from a houseboat.

best.

The rest of you Utah Red Users, same thing - keep in touch via email. I'll be changing to a 435 area code mobile phone shortly and I'll email you guys that number too.

Mine is, mla (at) Rubberball (dot) com. Please keep in touch, that goes for the rest of the Utahns as well.

Lol what are these "permits" you speak of? :hand: I try to fly under the radar.

Steve, I will call you soon. Glad to hear that you are in the area!

Mark, what marina and houseboat are you using at Powell? Just shooting stock there?

I have a shared boat in Wahweap. Yes, I'm just shooting stock down there in September. 1/2 the week is play, then my crew shows up and we shoot a couple of days.

Nice, I'll be at Wahweap all of October.

I'm trying to plan a big shot tomorrow night at Arches (wed). Is anyone here interested in joining us tomorrow night for the shoot? Hit me up with a PM.

Who will have the first Epic in Utah? I wouldn't mind paying a visit when it arrives. I am stage 2 but serial #683 so probably not the first, but certainly early. Anyway, just wondering. Gibby, are you here in the state now?

Yup, I moved my home to a rural ranch in the mountains of southern Utah last July. For security reasons I don't post or publish the exact location though - surely you can understand that. I'm Red customer #2 and I received the third shipping serial number Red One camera in the world (0008) - so its very safe to assume that I'm the first one in the State of Utah receiving an Epic.

I'm more than happy to network with other Red owners and users in Utah. With my Epics it will be little while before I can get around to hooking up with you guys (I first have some work to do with the cameras), but I'll keep you posted offline.

You can reach me at my regular email of steve (at) cut4 (dot) tv

I don't blame you keeping your location under wraps, particularly if you are in a rural area. after what happened in France we all need to be a bit more careful. Maybe well run in to each other in Vegas. Have fun with 008.

Steve, I can't wait to see a new RECON thread named "008" for you to fill up... :)

Godspeed for your EPIC-M!

I plan to be in Utah from mid-february till March or April, in the Richfield area Steve.

I think i sent you an email a few weeks back, but during that time, if you are shooting I'd love to help out. Don't want to butt into a production without meaning too. But if you need some help.

Thanks Zac...I'll keep you in mind for that. Thanks for offering. We're pretty well set for crew right now, but that could change.

Mars,

There are a number of RED's in Utah that are available for rental, including but not limited to my own. Feel free to PM me, when you're in need of a camera, and we'll get you hooked up.

Hey guys, any productions going on right now? I'm going to be in Utah from mid-feb till end of march, possibly the end of April. I'd love to jump onto a production. I can send a resume if anyone wants. I'm going to be somewhere between Provo and St. George.

Just throwing this out there.
