So I understand Birger is making a nikon 'smart' mount, which will be able to use the integrated aperture of DX lenses, and the Silent Wave Motor on certain lenses. I'm excited, but i have questions.

It may be that no one knows the answer except the guys building the thing, but I hope they read this forum, if not, they should. Maybe they'll take a page out of the Jannard Book of Marketing and talk about development as it happens.

So, the SWM in these lenses is very fast, and very precise. I dont see myself using something like a Supergrip with focus control to replace a followfocus, but I would really like to see something like 'programable hard stops' for lightning fast focus rolls with the motor. Would it be possible to program in stops, like "7.3 ft, infinity, 4.1 ft", and snap back and forth between them with near-perfect accuracy and speed?

I think a hurtle might be that most of these lenses have instant manual override focusing, which would screw up the hard stop calibration. But I could live with a "Don't touch this barrel, for chrissake!" policy when using this feature.

Me too.

Eric from Birger has been very open here and corresponded with us on many occasions so I'm sure he will listen to your request.

i thought birger is busy with the development of the Canon EF(s) mount.
it is not necessary to do that for nikon lenses so far..

It is if you want to use "G" & "DX" series lenses like the 12-24 f4 or 17-55 f2.8. They, like the EOS do not have iris rings. It's a very good option to have.

Hopefully Erik will chime in here.

edit Erik just jumped in while I was writing this. Hi, erik. Any news for us Erik? Features, price, availability?

I don't know how the manual override works but as far as I understand the programmable hard stops would be totally doable for the Canon EOS mount as the lens has actual codes for the focus positions (and I think feedback as well).

But you raise a good point as far as the controller that Birger is making for the mount - I think we would all like some programmable hard stops.
