OK, I know I am new to this forum. But I am not new to the whole red project.(I am a dvxuser) I been disconnected from the internet for a while. I keep hearing about more changes that are beeing done to this camera to match the quality of film. So I am very confused, the camera that people already got is not the full version yet? When will the full version of red be made available, with all working functions? I was reading around, i think i heard something about mid 2008. Is this correct? I am just so exited about the whole red thing plus I been off the net. So now.. I am totally confused:innocent: . I really need to know because this could mean I will have to change schedules to begin my feature. Also, to buy the full ready version, can I buy it now and just tell them i want to wait for the finished version?

If you have not yet ordered the camera. It would be sometime in 2008 before you could expect to recieve delivery. As far as function. Red will serve no camera before it time. They will funtion fully when shiped. althrough I would expect the Red team to continue improving software as time goes on.

Just to clarify,

No cameras are shipping yet... Soon... Probably 3-4 weeks, but they serve no wine before its time... So who knows.

There should be some RED's coming to your area. You could always rent one for a day to see if it will suit your purposes.

Where did you get this, "3-4 weeks," shipping information? Did I miss something?

Frankly, I don't see how this is possible since new designs for brackets and rods are being floated. I'm certainly not a manufacturer, but I would be very surprised if those bits can be finalized and produced in cost-effective quantities in such a short time.

Perhaps the first cameras are to be shipped without those accessories?

Has any information been issued on the progress of the new boards designs or the new sources of manufacture? Surely this sort of thing takes time as well.

Perhaps someone from the Red Team can shed some light on progress and expected shipping dates; I certainly wouldn't hazard a guess.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

I think he mean's until the first units ship. These companies are essentially beta-testers. Most reservation holders are thinking September or October. But nobody knows.

As far as full functionality: It appears that the cameras will ship with fully functional hardware but software still being updated. Think of a red as a souped up laptop with a sensor built right into the motherboard. It has a lot of computing power and thus much of the functionality is determined by software alone. This is great of course because the company can continue to improve its product and add features even after you've bought it.

I believe that some of the functions that will not be up at first will be 1080P/720P RGB recording and many of the user interface functions (don't quote me on this). The camera will definitely record 4K Redcode Raw to various types of media, functioning like a film camera straight out of the starting gate. So feature filmmakers should not worry.

Also, I think it is incorrect to state that the red team are trying to make it more "filmic." The delay in the production and shipping is to improve the image quality...not degrade it. I haven't seen talk of trying to make it more filmic, although I could be wrong...just doesn't seem like Jim and the Red team.

"Filmic" only in the sense of reducing any digital artifacts... :shifty:

About a week or two ago, I'm pretty sure Jim said that the current delay should take roughly 5 weeks to sort out. I do not believe it was said that the cameras would ship in 5 weeks... but I might be wrong. :) I'm guessing that's where he got that "3-4 week" figure. Accurate? I have no idea.

About a week or two ago, I'm pretty sure Jim said that the current delay should take roughly 5 weeks to sort out.

In the locked "News" thread, post number 117 on page 12 (can't seem to quote a locked thread), Jay A Kelley asked for a schedule in 5 weeks. The date was May 13th.

A little later Jim said this:

I expect (with all the tradional precautions) that we will be able to give a locked down schedule in 5 weeks (your number). But, remember that things can change... :-)

We are making progress... but I don't want to release another schedule unless it is a fairly hard one. I'd expect a good update on June 15th.

Very good news, Jim. Still dreaming to get my camera in August.
It may happen or may not.
