Hi,
I have got an IBM LTO3 drive and in the Win XP Control Panel it is showing up under Unknown Device as IBM Ultrium -TD3 SCSI Sequential Device.

My first question is ...Is it correctly installed?
Which tools are used for backup of files from hard drive to the LTO3 drive?

Thks

I ma sorry i have not the answer for you but i would like to attach me to this thread to ask "How you choose" an Lto..

I saw hat yours cost 2.55 USD..i sow others from Quantum (apparently the same single tape drive model ) much more expansive...

I have no idea what are the difference between the two...
so a "simple" 1 tape Lto unit ho much should cost ?and were are the difference?Speed maybe

Thanks

Hi Gabriele,

Pricing for LTO drives varies by both manufacturer and reseller. I'd recommend that you shop around for the best price.

The big difference between LTO levels is storage capacity and performance. However, not all systems will see a big boost in performance between LTO-3 and LTO-4, so the reason to move up to LTO-4 is strictly capacity. With LTO-4, you get 800GB per tape compared to LTO-3 at 400GB. You'll really only see the performance difference if you're running a very high-end system with either Fibre-Channel or SAS for connectivity and a high-end RAID array feeding the data.

While Quantum is one of the LTO manufacturers (HP, IBM, Quantum, and Tandberg DATA), selecting them is very dependent on your platform. If you are in a primarily Windows shop, Quantum is a very good choice. However, if you are in a primarily Mac shop, we advise our clients to use HP or Tandberg DATA - both of which provide very good support to Mac users.

Hopefully that gives you some useful guidance.

Tim
