oh hell yeah! that shot looking up through the trees was pure cinema!
i've been posting about this camera as a possible b-roll or c-roll camera for a while now. i think the trick is to keep it steady and smooth, and the images will be great.
this was without an adapter, right?

It seems hard to believe that you can get those pictures from a camera that is a little over $1000. I guess seeing is believing.

Shit, why can't Panasonic put a sensor like that in the HVX?
Or any of their other cameras? Or why isn't Canon
making an higher end camera with that sensor....
Regardless, I have my order in for the HV20
as we wait for the RED....

We're probably going to pick up a couple of HV20s for stuff that doesn't justify breaking out the Red package. We had been looking at significantly more expensive cameras before that little thing came along.

Stu (writer of The DV Rebel's Guide and of The Orphanage fame) has been writing good things about the HV20 for a while over at Prolost (http://prolost.blogspot.com/), his blog. I'm tempted by it just to get some experience with the mid-level resolution as a stepping stone between my DVX100 and the Red One.

I bought one. It is great. I have previously said that this and the Red are by far the best values on the market right now.

The other day my wife said "honey I'd like to get a video camera for our vacation, nothing too expensive", being a selfless guy I thought "Hmm, how can this work for me?" I did a little research and ordered an HV 20, "for the family". I came home from a scout today and the box is sitting in the kitchen, whatever. checked my e mail, went to Reduser and now.. I can't wait to open that box ! see ya.

im going to sell my 100a, buy this camera.. and rehouse it.
I dont want to bring a small camcorder to a professional gig.. so I will rehouse it in a much more solid and professional housing.. (it will still be compact)
Great piece of gear for B-roll... maybe we can get the Reel-Streem guys to do some mods!! get a 2k output or close too
Bruce Allen

Yes, shooting to Intensity works well. I directed something shot that way last night, actually!
Zakaree, it has a Cine mode which is pretty decent - gets a flatter dynamic range and less sharpening, similar to (but not as good at, of course...) a Reel-stream mod. I have the famous Stouffer chart used for the Red latitude tests and will post some tests when I have time... at the moment I'm working on a homebuilt sub-$1000 10.6" 720p LCD monitor for it (which has HDMI in so will work with the Red too...) and that is killing me for time (okay, along with, you know, a full time job ;)
here's some photos of it hooked up to the HV20 - http://www.boacinema.com/projects/lcd_monitor/
I think the beauty of the HV20 is that it leaves you with more money to spend on other things that don't go out of date - eg lights ;) - or get a 35mm adapter and start buying Nikon lenses that you can use with the Red. I've even considered getting the Red zoom, since the sgpro and Brevis have PL mount adapters...
Cheers

LOL. That's how I got mine...under the pretense of family videos.
I'm amazed by this camera. I've used it for some brief family stuff and then as a b-camera on bikini shoots. I have to say the quality is very nice, especially when viewing HDMI out to an HD TV.

You should just put it in a underwater housing. That would confuse anyone who looked at it:)

Not with an HV20 you didn't. Its flavor of HDMI doesn't work with the Intensity. You can use the component connections with an Intensity Pro, though.

To the rhythm that the reduser.net users are buying this new toy, I believe we must ask to Jarred a sub-forum dedicated to this Canon or to the single CMOS chip technology cameras.

Yes I damn well did! Use Velocity brand HDMI cables. It IS compatible. Went straight into Premiere.

I'm going to find out soon - was too busy directing performance to worry about the technical stuff. This wasn't my shoot technically - I was just called in to work with the actress. They just happened to be using an HV20 too and had a fancy Intensity setup.

I'm looking at the brevis to nikkor with the Zoom lenses I will be using for red. This will give me a third camera for a run and gun/r and d.
Does any one know if blackmagic has realeased the new software update for the hv20 yet?
I haven't heard.

No. But after a bit of research, it turns out that Bruce's assertion seems to be correct. It seems that the only way to get the HV20 to work with an Intensity card is to use the Velocity HDMI cables, made by Impact Acoustics. Why this particular cable should be any different than any other HDMI cable is a complete mystery to me and a lot of other people, but it does seem that it is different - somehow - and allows this to work. I ordered one from Cables To Go (a supplier I've used at work a number of times). If it doesn't work for me, I'll let you know.

Of course! Everything is ready, except for the housing - have a bunch of options for that but want to make something really nice - eg easily mountable on Noga arm, etc... I only managed to hack all of this stuff together a few weeks ago (after MONTHS of research) but some people have gotten impatient and started buying the raw panels from me ;) Anyway, the HDMI input should mean it would work for Red too (fingers crossed...)

Cool - thanks for the info. I'm in no rush, but if it works with Red, I'll come a-knockin'. I think it would be interesting to try bolting one of these to a remote follow-focus for the your AC.

That's the idea - something that is cheap, really sharp, and complementary to the Red system - fits in the niche between the small and proprietary (eg 5.6" RED) and large and expensive screens (eg 17" or larger, with HD-SDI inputs). Primary goal is for it to help you make sure everything is in focus easily. Sorry, I am leading this thread astray, though.
Back to HV20-specific stuff - a guy did comparisons between HDV, HDMI -> uncompressed, HDMI -> MJPEG and HDMI -> two flavors of Cineform. When I have his permission, I will mirror his files and post the links here. Summary is that HDV definitely loses a lot more resolution than the others (of course!) It's still highly usable though...
