Shot his last few films digitally, and used the Genesis on Grindhouse. I wonder if Red will be for this next Rodriguez project? I hope they follow this film in the tradition of producing a specific 'look', as what filmmakers did on 300.

Rodgriguez is closely tied with Sony, he has "The hook-ups!".

Not sure he'd hop off that train soo easily.?

I hope he switches. The more people, big name or little, art-driven or profit driven, the better. Red will force other companies to drop their prices to compete. Hopefully they will do the same thing on the pro-sumer level with their handheld. The big guys (sony panasonic etc.) have been holding features like native 24p over people's heads for too long. We all know it doesn't cost them any more to manufacture a camera that can output native 1080p 24 instead of some cheesy HDV interlaced crap, yet they dont make them bcause thy know what these features are worth to people. Its time for them to pay... enter red

Not necessarily. RR shot Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Spy Kids 2 with Panasonic Varicam - Sin City with Sony gear - and (as mentioned) Planet Terror with Genesis. "EL Mariachi" was S16 and "Desperado" was 35mm proving a history of a filmmaker that uses the best that's available to him at the time. Troublemaker Studios is now Troublemaker Digital, so we know where his interest lies. If the timing is right, I'd put money on him going RED. DALSA Evolution may also be a contender, but Rodriguez has always been a rebel and that aspect of the RED camera has to appeal to him.

I'm pretty sure Once was shot on the F900 as well as Spy Kids. The first studio released feature to shoot on the varicam was Borat.

Not true sorry, there were at least 2 features from Japan and Thailand that were shot on Varicam when it was intially introduced.

I guess you mean hollywood features? Or US features?

Once was an F900 as was Spy Kids.

The Panavision Genesis uses Sony parts so same difference.

I meant major studio, so yes Hollywood features.

I think the point is that Rodriguez likes digital productionn
; given that, why would he want to shoot with anything else unless red is not available ?

Wrong. Once upon a time is Sony HDCAM, Spy Kids is Sony HDCAM - both 900.
Please check your sources before posting - no pun intended.

Varicam is nice - but not so much for for cinema.
The low 720p resolution (<1 million pixels) is pretty low, 1080p (>=2 million pixels) offers solid resolution for 35mm out.

"EL Mariachi" was S16 and "Desperado" was 35mm proving a history of a filmmaker that uses the best that's available to him at the time.

"best" might be not exactly the right word :)

RR quotes:
"Film is slow, film is expensive, film is not creative - film take's too long."

"The worse the better... for El Mariachi, I used a 16M this is a 16S, this is exactly what I had. It helped me move fast because it was light, it was very noisy so I could do the sound in a wacky way, but this thing here would cost you about $2000... I found somone who had one of these sitting around, he wasn't using it. I borrowed it from him, I shot my movie."

i agree, however, he also might stick with sony.
we here surely will use hdcam, 1080p uncompressed & red together.

For my money El Mariachi is his best film...

Though I haven't seen the latest one yet.

Robert Rodriguez is also known to have a frugal approach to his craft. If he sees an opportunity to get equal or better results for cheaper, he'll take it, 'cause that's the kind of person he's always claimed and proven to be. I'd bet anything that eventually, after weighing the economical and artistic benefits of using RED against all other cameras, he'll end falling in love with RED, guaranteed.

Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and his wife Elizabeth Avellan have "hopped off the train" after 16 years of marriage. Robert will "hook-up" with his leading lady from GrindHouse Rose McGowan.

Just to back up your statement. I was at the Tarantino party two nights ago in Cannes and "YES" Rodriguez has indeed "jumped ship". He and Rose were never more than an arms length from one another. And if I'm not mistaken, He will shoot REDcam exclusively, when made available to him.

cheers,

B.

yeah, however HDCAM to disc or to HDCAM SR are 2.07 Millions.

p.s.
Graeme, thanks for the info about the 1440 horizontal resolution. I was indeed under the wrong impression that the 1440 referred to the YUV-subsampling, but you are right - have it now a) tested and b) confirmed by sony, 1440 is the resolution, not the subsampling. HD-SDI however is 1920.

I however, shame on me, do like many of RRs movies and even think that SIN CITY was quite innovative and wild. Also i admit to be really looking forward to see "his" barbarella :)

I don't think Sony actually records 1080p unless it is the dual SDI recorder - I think I remember the white paper that said the camcorders actually do a high pass filter that knocks off 30% or so right off the bat and then it seemed like maybe they actually record 1440 x 1080.

I am sure there are guys on this forum that know the exact details. I'd be curious to know too.

Is that for the artistic content, or just to see whatever hottie will play the Barbarella part?

RR puts out some fun stuff as far as I'm concerned - but mostly he's got some helpful behind the scenes stuff on DVD that inspires a lot of indies that they can do this stuff too (write, direct, shoot, edit, score). He uses a small crew, they all can do everything and they work fast. I like the way he does business.

HDCAM camera via HD-SDI : 1920x1080, 10bit, YUV422
HDCAM camera to camVTR : 1440x1080, 08bit, YUV311

HDCAM SR cam to disc/HDCAM SR : 1920x1080, 10bit, YUV422, 10bit RGB444

Betcha Rose won't let him out of her sight when he starts on Barbarella with a new hot babe. hehehe. Unless he uses her for the main part.

Yup, I saw Robert and Rose together at the Grauman's Chinese Theater Grindhouse premiere.

As well as Tarantino, Eli Roth, and Mr. Weinstein hangin out with eachother.

Meh- I hope it's someone other than Rose for Barbarella. It would be very boring if all of Rodriguez's films from now on starred her.
