We are considering this type of event going forward vs. a booth in the halls of NAB. Thoughts from those that went?

Jim

Personally, I think this event was better. I planned my whole visit to NAB around the Red event.

An Evening with Red filtered everything Red into one location and brought Red-specific vendors together with Red-specific users.

Since I am not yet a Red owner, I wasn't positive I was welcome at first. A private message to Steve cleared that up. So the question is: How can you have this event in the future, instead of at the convention, and bring in new customers?

BTW: I have posted number of pics over at SCARLETUSER (since we have no restriction on number of images... :) ):

Ketch, forgot to thank you in an earlier post for bringing the Tirami Su. Thank you! You know you're untouchable when the hotel staff can't throw you out know matter how hard they try.

Steve you have thanked me many times, and you big smile was more then a thank you in itself.

What makes me truly Untouchable is the so strong support from this community, and I know you had your hands in it as well, so I thank you for that, it would definitely have been a huge shame to having to take back home almost one Thousand portions of Tirami Su'. :(

And let's not forget Ketch's tiramisu! I had the "serial number" 1000 ...

Peter

Thank you Peter, you guys @ MaxxDigital had sure come out with some Bad A%@! stuff this time, congrats.

BUt lets be honest Peter, you were first given one, but then I considered the Size factor of the portion vs. yourself, and left you teo more on the way out, so technically you had "serial numbers" 998, 999 and 1000 :)

ciao

Does anyone have some of the information given by Michael Cione during the second session, "Red postproduction state of the union" specifically the debayered images from deferent editing platforms or the histogram demo?

Plaster City did a great job on the reel, and so did you on the Behind the Scenes clip...very cool stuff!

So, since I have been disconnected and I just saw the reel, can someone confirm that SS was shooting his "Do not vote" using Red? Is the sky falling?:sifone:

I had a great time, got to meet some fantastic folks, loved the moco robotic arm, great lenses. It was an effective and entertaining evening. Thanks to Steve for organizing the event.

I liked that the event was focused. Made for a better experience, easier to absorb information about the subject at hand. You should definitely do it again.

Great event! Thanks Jim, Red Team & Steve!
This type of event is much better than the floor of the NAB...Can you expend it to Two days next year??

Also, I mentioned this at the event and I want to note it here as well that this wouldn't have been possible without Jarred's hard work creating and maintaining the REDUSER community.

Thanks again Steve for putting all this together.. you did an incredible job for a one man band. Look forward to next year.

This was my first Red event that I had attended and I had a blast. Great work Steve and everyone else who made this event happen. I am still having a hard time believing the price for the set of lenses I saw on the projector.

Thanks again.

Agreed...

Say Jarred, would it be possible to look into moving it up to Monday or Tuesday next time? Being towards the end of the week - well, it was the only event worth staying for.

A shorter NAB week would be refreshing. :-)

Yeah... thats a good idea.. I can't imagine why anyone would need 3 whole days to cover the NAB show floor... With the help of Finners great map, plus random other booths its pretty easy to cover it in a day.

Two days was what I had and it was tough. One thing that would really help would be to bump the event to at least 5 so we dont have to leave the floor early.

I know my voice will be in the vast minority here, but I think you get much more benefit (as a company) exhibiting at NAB than you do at a private party. Please don't get me wrong; I had a great time at the event and there was a ton of valuable information to take away from it. My feeling, however, especially since it was a "REDUser" party, is that nearly all who attended were already sold on RED and from a marketing standpoint it didn't expand the base whatsoever. It felt weird walking around at NAB and overhearing people say things like "did you see that new Panasonic camera?" or whatever, and knowing that at no point during their stay would they even have the opportunity to see the different, amazing things that RED is doing.

I know RED's name is out there in many circles and certainly the visibility is growing rather nicely. But we're all "plugged in" here... I don't think we're really the audience that the booth at NAB needs to reach, to be honest. And one needs not even be at NAB in person to hear about offerings there... there are all kinds of press and people running around shooting "the latest and greatest technology" from the show floor, and that's the stuff that gets put on YouTube and talked about. That advantage is completely lost by ignoring the convention.

I think having a "RED DAY" or the like where we can actually touch the product, power it on, see what it can do would be the best kind of event for the people here... as it stands, most people buy RED product without ever having seen it functioning in person previously. That's pretty remarkable really... I mean, how many bought a RED before seeing one in person? How many people have already placed reservations for RPPs without seeing as much as a still frame from these babies or doing tests to feel great about a $20K investment? Granted, we are blessed that RED actually makes quality stuff that goes beyond expectations and to date has not disappointed. Still, I think some sort of showroom event where people can do more besides take pictures of empty aluminum shells under acrylic barriers would be awfully nice.

So that's really my gut feeling... there are two different crowds of interest here, and I think keeping the booth at NAB next year would be an incredibly wise decision for so many reasons. Probably the most important is that Scarlet and Epic will be at a prime point in their release schedule and perfect for showing off en masse. Since RED is opening the floodgates to an enormous new world of customers with a significantly lower price point on their base models, I don't think it's smart to ignore the general public with this release. Again, that doesn't mean that as a REDUSER community we can't do something special, more targeted, and perhaps more exclusive, but from a promotional and marketing standpoint I think skipping NAB entirely is a mistake. Just my two cents.

Tell that to the over 1400 people who showed up at the FCPUG SuperMeet Tuesday night.

Hi Häakon!

You have a very good point. However this year I believe RED was much better off in "private" environment. Not having any actual prototypes to showcase at NAB would have backfire in my opinion. All the competition would use it to bash RED as much as they could. I know RED ONE by itself is a huge achievement and something to be proud of, but negative bashing of "dummy" EPIC and Scarlet would take the glory away IMHO...

Next year is going to be different. Both Scarlet and Epic will be out and well established by NAB'10. But even then I would suggest two-sided effort:

A. REDUSER supermeet ala this year's Wednesday. The main benefit would be to keep all RED-related products and services under one roof so to speak. Kind of like the annual MACWORLD. A RED-centric 1-day expo...

B. A smaller (or bigger) stand at NAB to showcase RED products to the general public and to get press coverage. With actual working products (Epic & Scarlet) and ton of new accessories there will be plenty to keep RED ONE company...

Just my two cents...

:) Peter

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your post.... I agree completely and was just looking forward to the future. :) With no working product, it probably would have been a slip to exhibit this year... but with everything in full swing next year, I think it would be a terrible mistake to write the convention off and not be able to show people physical product that they can explore, learn about, and get firsthand information from.

I think a two-event system would be best as well... like I stated, I think there are two different audiences being targeted here and those who are "in the know" are probably looking for different information than someone who still is unsure of RED or just hasn't used the product before. I don't know if two separate events during all the chaos that is NAB is realistic for the team, but I've certainly learned never to doubt them. I just didn't want the great time that we all had to cloud our judgement... I think Scarlet and Epic is a massive unveiling and RED's presence shouldn't be missed where one of the biggest spotlights is waiting to highlight them.

I'm interested to see what goes on at these AJA parties. All I know is the Voodoo Lounge on top of the Rio seemed to be the place. Ran into quite a few Redusers along with some Red reps. Sean is way different when he's not working...in a good way.

I didn't get a chance to thank you Steve but you did an awesome job this year on the event. Seems like you have uncaged the monster. Maybe next year we can have a somewhat official Reduser after party. The Voodoo Lounge on top of the Rio was kind of cool and it had an awesome view. Of course I would only say have the party there if the event happens at the Rio again.

I suggest moving next year's REDUser Event to a hotel closer to the convention, but at least on the Vegas strip. That way, it is still convenient for people to get back and forth on the MonoRail system.

As for an after party. That would be a great time, I'm sure. I'd volunteer to help organize it.

Exploring this option for next year. I think having models on stage would be a lot more entertaining than having me on stage.

Now, I didn't get a chance to view the Red Primes, but my guess is that they are so good that models will actually shy away from that part of the show as the lenses will resolve way too much detail. Just a guess, I could be wrong.
