Anyway, you guys have fun, I won't be attending. I'll actually be going to Vegas a couple weeks later to play in a hockey tournament and couldn't justify two trips so close together. Or at least the wife told me I couldn't justify them.
Corrado, excellent artwork! ...As usual. :)

This is great to read. Though many are dismissing the importance of trade shows, for many of us real users the trade shows are an important time to connect with community and find out much more than is available on the web or on "road shows" (i.e. marketing people demoing software or hardware they don't use or understand; no comment on RED, this is not a comparisons of oranges to apples).
Last year's RED night was hugely valuable to myself and others. I look forward to attending this years event, then coming back to my community to talk about what I learned. It was starting to look like NAB was just going to be a vacation this year. Now, its back to work, work, work!!!

I'll try and work on the wife. Maybe I can talk her into letting me go... With the hockey tournament, another trip I have to take a few weeks after that and then trying to arrange a family vacation later for later this year, she's clamped down on my spending.
Steve, go play some basketball. It will do you some good.

Steve, go play some basketball. It will do you some good.
I have taken the first step. I'm working out again. It's amazing, my RED case that was unwieldy before, is now manageable. Not light by any means, but this gives me hope that if I can stick with a workout routine, I just might get myself in basketball shape. Now hockey shape - I was never in hockey shape.
Jeff Kilgroe
02-12-2009, 04:58 PM
Hehe... I'm not in hockey shape, either. Long story short, I've hurt myself pretty bad doing other things over the past few years and I'm not in real good shape anymore. After a serious back injury 2 years ago and some broken ribs last year trying to come back to hockey after over a year off for the back injury, I've done a lot of sitting on my ass. I'm improving lately, but I've also come to the realization that I'll never see my 19" biceps or 6-pack abs ever again.

I commend you and I'm glad that the community mentality is alive and breathing. Count me in, where is this email list I've heard so much about?
Are you referring to the guest list? There will be one again this year. Basically, you email me an RSVP and how many guests and you get added to the list. Last year, we had to stop taking RSVPs because we were going to exceed the capacity of the venue.
Dave Weber
02-13-2009, 12:42 PM
When will the list start? I want to make sure I get on.
Steve Sherrick
02-13-2009, 02:44 PM
For right now, just send along a PM with your name, how many guests, and an email address. Last year we created an email address to send your RSVP. Might do that again this year, but at least for now you can get on the list via PM.

While we won't have our big RED tent set up at NAB this year, as we are going to wait until we are ready to show off the new additions to the family with a special RED event at the right time, I'll very likely be at NAB this year doing presentations and workflow talks throughout the week with a number of the companies that are supporting RED these days.
So if you want me to come by the user event, shake some hands, kiss some babies, (or should I say babes - it is Vegas right?) and generally say thank you in person to those of you that have been such a critical part of RED's phenomenal growth and acceptance in our industry at all levels, I would be honored to be there. My only humble request is that when you pick a venue, try and find a place without a swimming pool nearby...
Looking forward to seeing many of you there.

Okay, the Reduser NAB 2009 website is up. You can go there (http://www.redusernab.info) to RSVP and get the details.
http://www.redusernab.info
Please do so as soon as you can. Last year got booked up quick.
I still have not locked in the location (still in negotiations) but this should be settled soon. The date is locked and the time will most likely be afternoon into evening (again, depends on the negotiation).
There will be a lot of exciting things to announce once everything is settled and then some things will be a surprise at the event.
Thanks!
Steve Sherrick

What Red related product vendors are you interested in seeing at the event? I want to make sure I haven't left anyone out. It's possible there is a company or product out there that I forgot about or don't know about. Give me your lists and I'll verify that I have attempted to contact them about the event.

Vendors, if you are interested in showing products, please get in touch ASAP. I am trying to finalize layout.
Thank you to everyone that has RSVP'd so far!
Also, I know there are still some workflows that are not represented at the event yet. Please get in touch with me if you are interested in doing a mainstage presentation.
Anyone have a really great music video they want to showcase at NAB?
Also, please head over to http://www.lafcpug.org/nab_2009.html to support the Final Cut Supermeet that will be happening in the same room the night before. I'll be doing a presentation at that event and will be giving everyone a preview of what will be coming at the Reduser event. The Supermeet is always a great show, lots of fun.
Hotels are dirt cheap, and airfare not too bad right now. If you're on the fence, check out some of the pricing.
Okay, my promotional hat is now coming off. Thanks for listening.

Let's not let this become a commercial affair... last years presos went to long... just have some cool stuff to wander around and look at, let people mingle and have fun.
This should be a social event. Not a tradeshow or another session with pitches.

Guys. I must ask. can anyone sign up for this event? Didn't find any relevant info on the first pages of the thread. Or do you have to be a camera owner already? One of our guys from work is apparently going after all. And they will probably expand their rental service even more this and next year. So would be cool to get him on the RED train.
So is there any chance of getting him into this event/party?

Guys. I must ask. can anyone sign up for this event? Didn't find any relevant info on the first pages of the thread. Or do you have to be a camera owner already? One of our guys from work is apparently going after all. And they will probably expand their rental service even more this and next year. So would be cool to get him on the RED train.
So is there any chance of getting him into this event/party?

Okay important stuff. Over the next few days there will be a lot more info surfacing about the event. There will be an agenda that will give you times for presentations, as well as how things will be laid out. For all of those who have registered, rest assured you'll be getting in. As you can imagine, the response has been huge and trying to track the RSVPs has been......fun. I hope to send out an email beginning of next week to all those who have registered that will include an official confirmation.
The event is evolving, and some things may change...uh... count on it.
But no doubt this is going to be one heck of a time, and for anyone that is still on the fence, I encourage you to go if you can. That's not marketing hype. I really do think this year will get into nuts and bolts of workflow. Got some fun presentations for you.
Okay, stay tuned.....

I need some help for the REDUSER event. If anyone can PM or email me if they can help with the following, I'll be very grateful.
Tripod - Heavy duty. Need it for one of the vendors who will be showing a very cool new toy.
Computer Monitors Need at least a couple of them, DVI/VGA compatible.
Raffle Sales People If you have significant others who will be going along but really don't care about the show so much, they might make good candidates. I'm willing to spot them some money for doing it. Need at least two people.
Checkin People Same as raffle in terms of ideal candidates.
Walkie Talkies These would be very helpful for organizational purposes. Budget is getting tight, so renting them may not be an option.
Steve's Personal Assistant I need someone that can help me run around and do various things that night. I'm harmless, easy to work with, and I'll buy you a drink.
Might be some more things, but that's it for now.

Okay, details of the event have been updated in the first post. I encourage everyone to get over to the Amazon as early as you can. I know NAB will still be going on, but I am expecting that the room where the main stage is at to fill up very quickly. Michael Cione's piece will surely be worth getting over there for and we have some special guests who will be worth seeing too. The workflow part of things will kick in and be intense for the next few hours with a lot of information about editing and finishing RED footage. And of course there will be all of the other attractions there as well.
Anyway, just wanted to give everyone the update so you can make your plans, and to make sure I emphasized how important it is to get over there as soon as possible. You all know I'm not a hype machine, so it ain't that. Based on RSVPs I have, we're going to have a full house.

Shawn, one word for you - CLONING! :)
I suggest getting there early. Pick the Main stage events that you really want to see and if there is a slot in there that doesn't interest you, head over to the vendor sections or RED displays.
I know it's an action packed day, but I figured REDUSERs would be disappointed with anything less. Better to have too many things to do, than be bored...I think.

Adam, I mentioned a few posts back that last minute RSVPs were not guaranteed to get responses. I will try my best. Most likely you won't have trouble getting in. Unless we reach the point where fire codes are being broken, and the hotel makes us stop people from coming in. A place on the guest list makes sure you'll get in. Just showing up still gives you a shot but no guarantee.

Please do not send in any more RSVPs. They'll probably not get a response. If you have RSVP'd but not yet received a confirmation, send a message to red at obscureknowledge.com.

Hey Steve, must say, very exited on this year event, just by the reading of it, it sounds like is truly going to be a blast this year.
What I wanted to ask was what it will be the food schedule, as I'm trying to get an idea on how to organize my self for the Tirami Su', on when should I bring it, which I would prefer to do so right off the back @ 3:00pm so I don't have to leave and come back later, but I would need a space under a table some were that can be kept safe from the mouths of the HUNGRY REDUSERS :drool5: :) .

Ketch,
Food will be served all day. I would keep the Tirami Su ultra low profile. The hotel will certainly curtail the efforts if they see it. So, maybe bring people over a few at a time.
Maybe one of the vendors will allow you to keep it under their table.
The earlier, the better. Maybe right at 3PM.

Well, there were a number of factors that played into this and lots of logistics. Due to the venue we were able to get and the prototypes being ready to be shown, it became a reality. It was the Red Ray codec (which is bloody amazing, by the way), but it wasn't playing from an optical disc. There was nothing to take a photo of.
The RPPs are brilliant, and seeing the Scarlet and Epic prototypes up close in person was so great. You won't believe how small you can make them and still be shooting 5K at cinema frame rates. The revolution continues this year in a massive way.

WOW!!! Steve, what a  you have definitely out deed yourself this year!!
It was a true pleasure seen again all my fellow Redusers, and meeting new ones, funy, it was this the first time I ever seen Jim w/o is :sifone: , but at list He got to enjoy my Tirami Su', wish I could have traded him for some RPP's, absolutely insane lenses, and of all the ones present this year, the RPP's have smoked the competition, from the bottom to the top, MP's have no longer the edge on this market, unless you absolutely must have T1.3 off course, but in its range of T stop there is absolutely no comparison to S4's or Arri's, and the german lenses and the rest of the crowds, is just that, a crowd.
There were many cool things to see and play with, including some amazing stuff from Ron and Peter at the MAXX Digital table, the REDHEAD form GearNex, the also crazy robotic arm from CMOCOS, and off course the surprising unbelievable REDRAY playing @ 10mbits as if was an image shown out of a 4k projector, also enjoyed this year presentation created by Corrado, what a great reel of RED images, and behind the scene shots, just amazing to see so much of what RED has been part in so little time, the speech by Michael Cioni was also very inspiring and true to were we wore and were we are going.
It seemed as if Jared is getting taller every time I see him, and Kelly more beautiful and kind by every year past, off course I only kissed her once.. okay two times :)
So too many names to mention them all, but a HUge thank you to every one there that came to my booth.. well actually my cart of Tirami Su' and say hello, and for the many kind words and support received by every one.
So again Steve, my congratulations for the job very, very well done.

While I was unable to attend this year, I must say the community aspect of RED as a company makes me believe the more community oriented nature of the Reduser party vs. NAB floor booth will always be the preferred way to approach NAB.

As someone who did not attend nab I preferred this format, as I was able to stream the whole event and have yet to be able to track down footage from the floor. However when I first found out about RED a year and a half ago it was the nab booth interviews on youtube that got me up to speed to understand what red was trying (and succeeding) to do. Much as it is in our favour for things to go towards parties I would have thought that the newcomers (those who don’t post here) would rather the fast pitch at a booth and are more likely to take a gamble walking into a booth than finding a party. Just something to think about.

Hi David and welcome to REDUSER,
while I understand your point, I believe that the goal for this community is to make it just that a community of users, and camera owners or looking to be owners, and the news to those interested in purchasing a Digital camera, will get to them asap as they do a search for what camera they want to get, I believe that no one will ever buy a camera on this state of age w/o searching and researching the net for info on the various models available, that was how I found out about RED few years ago.
And events such as that just past, brings every one together and it is done so in an environment of great comfort with all at your finger tips, there is a Bar there is plenty of food (free) and even so I personally can't eat Buffet style foods, every one there sure did and didn't had to go hungry for the all day as many do at NAB or take a quick brake to the nasty fast food court.
There is so much more space and time to get to know the goods as well as to get to know each other, and strengthening relationships, both among users and with manufacturers of the products to use with the Cameras.

Jim,
Holding the event separate from NAB is better, more time to visit with those truly interested in seeing RED develop. The presentation room was almost full at first, then slowly dwindled down as folks left to go mingle, see the vendors, etc. It was very nice to see the Scarlet and Epic prototypes, the lens booth (remarkable), the vendors (I was amazed at that crazy orange MOCO rig) and finally the great presentations. The only problem was missing some of the presentations because folks were enjoying themselves visiting with one another. I had a secret hope that RED was going to surprise everyone with a set of lenses for the raffle, or maybe a single lens. It was a bit strange having an employee win a prize, but to quote Seinfeld, "Not that there's anything wrong with that". Same thing happened as last year, several folks kept winning over and over again. Might want to figure out a way to spread the fun like the Final Cut User Group did, one win per person.
Steve did a great job organizing everything and it was very good to see such a strong showing from RED. That gives us, the customers, comfort knowing the company really does care and stand behind their products. Maybe a word or two from you next time, perhaps, just to add to the excitement?
A very nice event, all the way around.

Loved it as a party - it was like a "gathering of the tribe". The long lines, and distractions of an NAB booth are a different type gig. I liked the party gathering approach much better than the booth approach.

It's a good question. My answer is... I'm not sure.
From the perspective of a REDUser, and a proud member of this community, I liked the party / personal aspect of this much more.
Also, as I mentioned to you, the room was not that loud, the only time I was lost was when you gave me instructions to move to the center of the theater early on to enjoy the reel more.. (Something you caught immediately and yelled the instructions to the nice gentleman next to me, and he told me.. That was classy Jim).
As a person who feels protective of RED and it's success, I am concerned that the party does not favor those who have not really seen or experienced RED. Your tent at NAB always brings in new people.
I dunno, the 2nd part is something you can work out better than me.
My PERSONAL preference is to have the party.. It's more fun.
I will say this: If you are going to have it the last day of NAB, then start earlier and end earlier, both the RED team, and all the vendors (You too Jim) looked like they were about to pass out from exhaustion (My hearing also began to give out from being so tired.. Can't read lips with blurry eyes!).
Better yet, have it the day BEFORE NAB.. Everyone will have more energy and I think it could be a better experience.
Just suggestions.

We are considering this type of event going forward vs. a booth in the halls of NAB. Thoughts from those that went?
Jim
I think this format worked very well. It might be nice to have it at a place closer to the LVCC, so people could go back and forth easier, but the format was great.
Thanks again for a great time!

Is there any video from the event?
I know about the the videos from the live stream but they kind of look crappy
and I think the beginning was missed.
some one must have shot it in 4k

A booth will attract more new customers but is what "everyone else is doing." A party will not attract any more customers but will make those "in the know" feel special.

As with everything in life, you learn lessons as you go along. There are some things that went really well, and some things that could get improved next year. And they will. Last year we were in a small room with about 350 people. This year we had a much bigger space and a lot more people, well over a thousand. Next year I would hope the event would expand a little further. It's all about taking each one to the next level.
The one thing I know for sure is that I will stay off the stage and let those with stage presence run the show. :)
Ketch, forgot to thank you in an earlier post for bringing the Tirami Su. Thank you! You know you're untouchable when the hotel staff can't throw you out know matter how hard they try.
Also, I mentioned this at the event and I want to note it here as well that this wouldn't have been possible without Jarred's hard work creating and maintaining the REDUSER community. We probably take it for granted at this point but it's his effort and the rest of the REDUSER staff that allow us to all interact and leads us to events like the one in Vegas.
The staff at the hotel was actually great. The A/V guys were as well. Chris Eschweiler was great providing the technical directing, and Hugo did a great job coordinating things with the 4K projection. The whole Red team did a fantastic job building that space with the lens demo area, the display cases, and the couches. As usual, just really top notch presentation.
So, keep the feedback coming as this will help shape events in the future.

Needless to say we are in! Kudos to Steve for pulling this off!
The two main positive things about this:
A. Pretty much everyone who came was interested in RED and RED related accessories (both HW and SW), unlike the much more "general" crowd at NAB...
B. From the visitor's perspective - You can find all the RED-related products in one place instead of having to chase it all over NAB with many stands being hard to find...
One "negative" thing: Next year I will just focus on RED event and leave NAB to my colleagues. I am still recovering from having to handle support at 6 different locations at NAB and the RED event...
Once again huge thanks for Steve for pulling this off, RED and other vendors for participating and everyone who came to visit...
And let's not forget Ketch's tiramisu! I had the "serial number" 1000 ...
