AJA io HD?

In the workflow demo at NAB we were told that we'll be able to transcode from REDCODE to ProRES 422 on the fly as we import into FCP. Will this require additional hardware such as the AJA io HD?

I think thats a future "feature" in FCP like how P2 media is imported currently.

i too remember hearing it over at Apple demo of Mac Laptop Pro - you can capture from RED camera to ProRES 422 ( using AJA portable hardware unit - approx $2900) into new intel Mac laptop ....

don't know if the same applies to desktop mac ??

The "Log and Transfer" window in FCP 6 can be used to transfer compatible media from another drive to the FCP scratch disk, transcoding it to another format if required. It requires a mounted drive with a "valid directory structure". Currently I think this just includes P2 cards, XDCAM disks and Sony Video Disk Units. Presumably a future update of FCP will add RED-DRIVES and Flash media to this list.

This would be an entirely software based process, so an Io HD would not be required.

Ah, direct from camera..

This would mean shooting teathered and using the SDI out into the IO/HD then capturing direct as pro-res realtime encoded into the laptop.. well.. onto a raid mounted on the laptop.

You wouldn't need a serious RAID though. ProRES is sufficiently low data rate that it can be used with something like a LaCie Big Disk Extreme.

Not tested any HD yet, but SD ProRES scrubs at high speed without any problem from the internal drive of my Powerbook.
