View Full Version : Evolution of RED

Ok, here's the first round. I'm currently only including camera renders as they are the only files that Jim gave explicit permission to post in this (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2528) thread. With permission, I'll post all of the other files I have [including pictures of the camera, parts of the camera, frames from the camera, pictures of the test shoot sets and a few other miscellaneous files] in good time.
DISCLAIMER: These pictures are NOT all current and are NOT necessarily accurate representations of the camera as it is now or as it will be when it ships. This is for "historical" purposes only. There are no photos in here that were not released publicly on DVXuser.com, REDuser.net or RED.com; with a little digging, all of these pictures could still be found online. This is just a single location to get an at-a-glance look at the camera's evolution as we've seen it.
I'm sure I have missed a few pictures here. I also may have these pictures out of order. I'm posting them with labels including the dates the files were created on my computer [the day I downloaded them off of the three aforementioned websites]. I have also scaled a few pictures to save bandwidth.
The "placeholder" posts below are just so I can edit in additional pictures in the future, keeping the posted images at the head of this thread. They go up to the middle of page three, post 26. To skip to the discussion, click here (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2595&page=3) and scroll down.

Note the hard edge on the left side of the camera body around the RED logo where the flash ports install. Also note that the vertical "pin-striping" on the body is absent.

You should change the title to the "Evolution of Red" or something similar...
and maybe have some sort of timeline if you can remember them.. other than that, this is a pretty good idea, nice work Brook.

Changed the title. I'll add a timeline later today or tomorrow. Currently there are dates below the pictures which I hope are accurate. :)

Uh, Red still looks like this. It's not the 'evolution' unless you post pictures from early 06! Those would be cool to see again.
Jay A. Kelley
05-26-2007, 02:45 PM
I agree with Shawn, need the shots from day one up to now.. Right now this thread would be better called "RED Photos".. In fact you may want to consider that Brook, this way you can just post photos without having to adhere to some guideline that makes life difficult

I agree... but I don't have those pictures! While I've followed the project since the "beginning," I only started saving the pictures late last year. If somebody has the pictures, please send them to me and I'll add them to the thread in the proper order. :)
I hope somebody has them! If not, I'm sure Jarred has them on a hard drive somewhere at RED... :)

I don't know where these came from- but this was the first time I had any idea of the scale of the red. I remember thinking this was a picture of Franky- but I'm not sure if that's true.

Yeah the first few silver ones are very sweet. Hope some of the style will go into Epic.
The actual Red One design, as cool as it may be, makes it look a lot heavier than the first ones.

Of course, the R1 was inside "Frankie", just like new models in an exotic car mag are hidden by various panels. Very cool!
But this trip down memory lane is poignant now because over a thousand potential R1s have fallen into filmmakers hands IN THE PAST MONTH ALONE!
I was about to start a new thread to commemorate the awesome progress of this private company, and then I found this nice little corner to post in.
New lenses, storage, the pro lcd, and what November brings. Holy cow! I even noticed that I can access RED here in Taiwan on a traditional Chinese webpage! That's new as of today, too! (Although Taiwan and surrounding islands are a 'bit' off in map-rendering, and I can't read much Chinese...).
Red Digital Cinema is now a player to be 'reconed' with. You can all still smoke, but the pipe dream is over - Red is reality!
Michael T O'Connor

Any news on the replacement of those placeholders??
In any case, the thread should probably be updated with the latest iteration of the "classic" RED camera, which I would presume is the EPIC-X. I'll post the current render. I expect it to change somewhat by the time it comes out...

Although the prototypes at NAB were very similar, as far as I can tell.
