Done some searching and seems to be no posts in quite a while on whom has received there 18-85mm and what serial number they were. Let's get a dedicated thread going.

Right, who's gonna start the ball rolling?

The 18-85 backorder fulfillment policy isn't based on camera delivery date. It is based on your original 18-85 reservation serial #.

I received a message from Brian B. a few days ago....

.... when we receive the next batch from QC. I am estimating that we should receive those in about a week to two weeks.

BTW, I am reservation #121.

Curran is right. The 18-85's were sold as first-come, first-served and have no relation to camera serial number or camera ship date. Those who pre-ordered an 18-85 (with or without their RED reservation) were given serial #'s at one point and then later order #'s. I was originally given #380 for my 18-85 reservation, even though I reserved the lens along with my reservation for camera #1110.

That said, I have no idea how many 18-85's have been shipped. I'm thinking they have only shipped the initial 50 to 75 lenses so far. Based on original estimates, my #390 wouldn't have come up until June or July of 2009, I don't know if that is still accurate or not.

I reserved one, and actually paid in full, but never received an order number, or serial number, or anything. I am just waiting and wondering if it will be one month, or 1 year until I see that lens....... :(

I understand the original reservation number system and this is what i am hoping to get going, a thread on exactly this. I'm #286 so i was hoping it was going to be at around 150 by now.

My estimate is that they are between 90 and 100. With the new batch coming in a week or two they should get up to 125.

The 18-85 is a cinema lens. Highest quality, gorgeous sharp image with nice bokeh, no breathing or ramping, fluid movements throughout.

Totally worth it IMHO. The 18-50 and 50-150 don't come close.

MAN, these things are trickling out slowly. That's incredible. . . I keep wanting to buy one, but I need for more of them to get out there to help grease the gears of commerce. If I put in a reservation, I'd be waiting till Kingdom come.

And most [all] of those are people selling at a premium. They don't want/ need the lens themselves, but they were early reservations with their cameras and now they have the opportunity to flip the lens for a few $$$$. Such is life, but I have yet to see someone offer the lens at actual purchase cost.

actually, there was one on ebay that, if i remember, correctly sold for a little less than what he paid. another person was interested in trading one. apparently, it is a great value for the money but, it has some issues, so, discerning owners are choosing other, maybe more expensive, options.

I'm shocked...really.

From all reports i have heard it's a great lens and in no way can be compared to the other zooms that RED sell. But to sell under what he paid when there are hundreds on backorder and could be for many many months, even a year or more at this rate. Faaarrk. Oh well, bet the buyer was stoked!

Lennywood, are their noted weaknesses of the the 18-85 that you have heard of? thanks.

I am number 118 and still haven't received it, but should be soon as Red told me.

And yeah I would like to hear more about the issues you are talking about.

BTW, what have the actual owners use for lens support (as I think red doesn't sell a lens support)?
I think I found the answer: Optitek or Duclos

Thanks,
antoine.

Paul Leeming

Optitek here. Works great!

As far as the lens itself goes, this lens is cinema grade. I'm having a hard time convincing local clients though, mostly because unfortunately the first lenses from Red weren't anywhere near the same quality (18-50 and 50-150), though they are fine for the money and flexibility, and clients have wrongly associated Red lenses as being less than optimal compared to Cooke, Arri etc.

But I'll gladly put the 18-85 PRO up against any similar zoom and be confident it will hold its own.

Just note the front diameter is 139mm which is just over industry standard 138mm so make sure you have a way to put a matte box over it. RedRockMicro have a newer bracket for their MicroMatteBox which fits perfectly so I'd recommend that one if you don't already have something suitable.

Optitek, Duclos or Zacuto.

I have the Zacuto support for my RED Pro 300mm it works well. I wish they had a better system than their zip gear strap thingy. But it does work and it allows it to fit just about any lens.

I'm still hoping that the next batch will be released this week....

Based on original estimates, my #390 wouldn't have come up until June or July of 2009, I don't know if that is still accurate or not.

Well, considering they get released in batches of around 35 at a time, and the last batch was over 2 months ago.... with an average of 15 per month, my estimate is that it will be a wee bit past June or July.

Reservation numbers were only given out around the same time people originally reserved their camera. There was a $750 deposit required.

I've seen many RED 18-85mm zooms and I must say, they DO hold their own against other professional cine-zooms.
There is still that small margin that sets them apart from Angenieux but considering this is RED's first run at optics, I am VERY impressed.
