Curious if anyone has shot with any kind of boroscope or perascope lens on 2K or 3K. I am on a table top shoot and we just put the revolution lens on to shoot 60 fps, and the image is not getting tack sharp. Is this merely because of all the glass and the magnification going on in the lens mixed with lower resolution of the 2k image versus the 4k image? We did not want to mess with the back focus on the camera, but now thinking about it I don't know if that would necessarily help. Any thoughts?

The only time I've ever had a problem with a Revolution Lens was when it was on a 16mm camera. Back focus was the issue in that instance.

Matt,
Go ahead and mark the current backfocus on the camera and you'll be able to get back there. You shouldn't have to go too far on the ring before seeing a difference. I did see some red/revolution lens stuff recently that had a lot of abberation, maybe they had the same issues. Shoot in 3k if you can.
Shane.

Backfocus definitely crossed our minds, but the 5:1 zoom that we had on before was still tack sharp even in 2K. Curious if it might be more than backfocus and more on the resolving power of the lens on a 2k image.

Has anyone successfully used the revolution or any other snorkel/periscope system with the Red? I have a potential toy shoot coming up that I'd like to have one on. Does anyone have footage?

bump.

Can anyone comment on the successful use of a periscope type lens on the Red at 4k 24fps and in 3k for slomo? Are there problems with aberration?

I just used an Innovision Probe II+ on the Red and didnt like the results. Excessive CA in every shot w/ HR lenses.

I am going to try the T-Rex next time (http://www.pstechnik.de/en/trex.php).

I don't do a ton of tabletop, but I've had two recent experiences with probes on the Red:
I had quite a bit of CA with the T Rex.
I did OK with the Cine Magic.
Both at 4K 16x9.
Cheers,
Harry

Using only the center part of the image certainly doesn't help. The Revolution is already not that sharp at 4K, especially if you're using the mini lenses.

If 2K works for you, then there is the HD Scope. It's made for 2/3" B4 mount, but works great with the RED using the B4 adapter. The HD Scope is an incredibly clear, CA-free, high contrast periscope / borescope solution. It's also a very fast T4 with matched lenses and all-arial imaging for very clean lensing.

I know I sound like a sales brochure but this is one of those devices that I really think is quite nice. We have both the HD Scope and the B4 to PL mount adapter available for rent (and sale) at Abel and I invite any of you to make an appointment to come in to check it out.

I used the PS Technic Skater Scope on a toy shoot and was very happy with it. Only negative was the image gets a bit shifted to the warm side - easy to correct. That's the prototype #1 converted Tokina 11-16 f2.8 on there - It was a great combination with the scope.

Thanks Matt. I'm asking about this because I have a toy shoot coming up as well. I'll check the PS Technic out.

Mitch, I'll talk to my DP and maybe we'll stop by to check out that setup.

Our company, Cine Photo Tech has several T Rex and several HD Scopes.

This weekend, we are doing a hardcore test with the T Rex on the Red camera.
Let me know what you would like to see so we can incorporate as many scenarios as we can and we will share the results.

Great, thanks Brian. I'll talk to my DP about what we'd like to see with the T Rex.
