Hey all, Based on the Red's relatively slow start up time, I was wondering how often one would switch the camera off and on between set-ups or even takes. I assume the camera consumes a large amount of power when it boots up. I am AC'ing a RED shoot in the coming weeks and want to be prepared.

Also, I am recent film school graduate looking for work or work experience on film sets around Brisbane. Please PM me if you wish to discuss anything further.

The boot up is about a minute so you don't want to be doing it that often. you can get mounts for the red that let you put two batteries on the camera, so you can put a new one on and take the dead one off without having to power the camera down.

but to be honest it's not that big of a deal, as your not needing to reload the camera every 20 mins saving time there.

you can get big hollywood batteries but there big a cumbersome and threes no in camera warning when the battery will die.

what is great about the Red batteries is that they have quite a quick charge up time i been on shoots with 3 batteries and there was no issues of not having any charged batteries. I would always like to have 4, 2 on charge, one on camera one ready to go on camera.

as far as the booting of the camera using more power, i'm not sure. I know it uses more power when it's rolling than anything.

hope thats helped

Don't forget if you have a spare charger and lead you can power the camera off Mains AC power to save batteries for when you're on the move.

I dont like the fast charge, it will degrade the batteries
