View Full Version : 'VIEW' menu setting saved as metadata?

A very quick question:

Am I right in thinking that the selected setting in the 'VIEW' submenu on the camera (REDspace, REC709 or RAW) is NOT saved in the r3d file metadata?

Thanks in advance.

Correct. When you first load the footage into your editing system/ RedAlert/ RecCine, it will have that "look" (the RSX file), but it is only metadata and is NOT baked in.

Thanks for the reply, but that's not what I'm asking at all. I'm thinking specifically about the 'VIEW' setting in the camera menu (Video > View), and wondering whether the selection I make in the camera is saved as part of the metadata in the r3d file.

Let's say footage is being passed to a lab who are doing transcodes to an offline format. If I monitored in REDspace on set and I want the offlines to look the same, I have to tell the lab to set up the transcode with an output LUT of REDspace. That choice is not recorded as part of the metadata. Correct?

This is just one example, but I think it's important for communication between the set and the lab to be very clear for numerous reasons. If it's not recorded in the file metadata I have to communicate it some other way.

This becomes even more of an issue where grading systems are implementing the SDK for native raw access, but not necessarily using all the elements of the r3d metadata.

It is my impression that it is the metadata. It depends on how the post house bakes them wether or not they will see it, but for instance:

In RED Alert, the viewing lut used on set will activate when you hit the "meta data" button. ie: Change the output lut and gamma space to something other than what was shot. Hit the metadata button and viola, you are back to the original.
