View Full Version : All lenses cover the 4k sensor?

I read some camera test done on Dalsa system and they said that the production didnt use it because they made some lens test and the s35mm lens didnt cover the full 4k chip and only used the 3.3k.
I am curios if the nikon lenses here will cover the whole 4k sensor or no?
As well the Pl mount lenses. I ask this because we are setting a whole new production company in south america and we really want to go the whole RED ONE route (makes a big difference for as) from camera to delivery and as a cinematographer as well, lens choice is as important as the camera.
Any info would be great!
Thanks

All lenses designed for Super 35mm should optically cover the 4K area of the Mysterium sensor.
Nikon still lenses should, as the "still" 35mm area is larger than motion picture Super 35mm. If you click on the link in my profile, you'll be directed to my FAQ which has a chart comparing format sizes.
[edit: I have temporarily removed the format chart from my FAQ... it's growing.]

Thanks for the info. Gona check it now. I understand Still lenses but inventually if one would like to use film lenses like CS4, ultra prime etc they cover a diferente area than still 35mm lenses.
But I will check the info.
Thanks for your time.

The Dalsa sensor is slightly larger than Super-35, hence why some wider-angle lenses vignette. The RED sensor is the same size as Super-35 and lenses like Cooke S4, Zeiss Ultra Primes, etc. should work fine without vignetting. There are some older 35mm lenses that don't quite cover Super-35 though.

David,
Once again thanks for the info.

Super-35 negative is 24.8mm wide or so, though frameline guides for Super-35 extraction are 24mm wide. The RED sensor is 24.4mm wide.
I can't find the specs for the size of the Dalsa sensor but the size would extend into the perf rows of 35mm, so my guess would be that it is maybe 27mm, 29mm -ish wide?

Hi,
Be aware that many lenses will work fine with film S35 1:1.85 but will have a portholing issue when wide open when used on a digital sensor of the same size. Both Cooke SII/III wide angle lens will work fine on film but have issues with the P+S adapter and almost certainly a digital sensor.
I recently tested Zeiss 16 & 24 mm on a Phantom HD camera, both thease lenses have issues with a P+S adapter. At T4 the 16mm was OK, at T2.8/4 split the 24mm worked. The 35mm was missing so I don't know, however the 50 + 85mm worked perfectly. Whilst the Phantom is not a Red, I am fairly sure the information will be useful.

35mm
22mm x 16mm = 27.2 (diagonal)
35mm (useable Red Code format) at Red One
22.2 x 12.6 = 25.5 (diagonal)
I can't understand why the old 35mm cine lenses shouldn't cover...

Hi Mr White,
Most cover but may porthole when wide open, stop them down & they will probably work, that is not the same as vignetting! They were designed to work with film and not digital sensors! Film does not care the angle at which light hits it, a digital sensor does.
It's not about "does it cover", but "does it work for you"! That question will only be fully answered after cameras are available for you to test with.

I understand. There will be hassles. But the old 35mm lenses will cover right?

Here's something that I cannot understand:
...because diagonal of the frame in 35 mm format cameras is 25.66 mm...
25.66 mm?? What's this?

Hi Mr White,
Some will 'Cover`but may not work properly wide open (or possibly when stopped down) without a Red camera to test it with that is a guess!
Wide angle lenses with a small exit pupil will be an issue IMHO. Zeiss Standards & Cooke SII/III's will probably have issues, they don't work properly with a P+S adapter.
There are different aspect ratios, 1 may well have a diagonal of 25.66.
I think there is a good chance there will be portholing with that 8mm.
