So I just got back from Coraline in 3D... I have seen many of the 3D releases now and still think IMAX's polarized solution they have been using for years is my favorite. The Dolby system is not bad, but I can't help but think that maybe it could have been a lot better if the glasses didn't suck so hard. The lenses are small. They have some severe reflective coatings on them that create odd... reflections (surprise!). And beyond just feeling awful on your head, someone else has been wearing these things and that just bugs me.

My request:

Jim, I'm not sure how involved you are with Oakley these days, but what would be freaking AWESOME would be a pair of sweet Frogskins with Dolby 3D lenses in them that I (and everyone else) could buy. It's pretty clear that there are a ton of films that will take advantage of the system, and honestly I would pay $150 for a pair of my own glasses that I could bring to the theater with me so I wouldn't have to wear those god awful theater POS's.

Anybody else want in on this action?

Yeah, me to. And make some Red-Cyan one for the Internet Viewing. But there 150$ would be a little to expensive ;-)

Darren,

Are you thinking linear or circular? We're setting up a small 3D theater that we're hoping will be circular and would possibly be interested if your design is compatible and priced within our budget.

Whoever does this should consider offering them with a choice of glass type, providing for each of the main formats. Linear, circular, spectral, anaglyph... And maybe shutter glasses too.
Either you can choose which kind you want to buy, or even better, make a set with changeable glasses for the different systems. I'd surely spend some bucks on something like that.

? Where are you based? Health and hygiene regs state that a new pair have to be provided each and every time...and they have to be wrapped (with warnings clear about not using as sunglasses due to no UV protection). We get through boxes of the things daily and have literally hundreds hanging around the place.

I definitely second that...I would pay reasonable dollar (or pound in my case) for a decent pair.

I can say this, our focus is on a reasonable price tag. Right now we are working on getting the best suppliers. There will be options on the lens.

Are you talking about infotect glasses or pol-glasses? Dolby uses the Infotect technology where the glasses are extreamly expensive.

Hello, I am a 3-D enthusiast, here in Montreal (Home of the IMAX 3-D technology) we have dozens of theathres showing Real D, IMAX Linear & Dolby Infinitec. The Dolby glasses are about 70$ USD each and have an alarm in them. They are not washed between showings, we (the audience) are given handi-wipes to clean the lenses and the frames ourselves! On top of that my local theatre wanted a drivers liscence or social insurance card as bond while we were in the movie! - YIKES! I'd gladly pay $$ for my own set, however the Dolby system is strictly licensed by Infinitec from Germany, I believe it is very proprietary and the filter material cannot be purchased (I'd love a pair)

Katzenberg first raised the promise of 'transition lenses.' "We are working with the largest eyeglass company in the world, Luxottica, and with a team from Oakley, and they are very close to having a transition lens," he said.
"When you are outside they are sunglasses, and when you go into the movie theatre they transition into 3D glasses," he added.

Love that. I really hated this big clumpsy Glasses we got at the my bloody Valentine Screening here in Germany. Hope to grab a pair of Oakleys with 3d-Glass built in. That would really rock.

And you'll look like a rockstar between all this People wearing these big (at least red colored) Plasticglasses. Yey, instant Stardom ;-)

... but you'll need swappable lenses...
circular polar for RealD, 45 deg Polar for large-format (real) IMAX, 90 deg Polar for 2k digital psuedo-Imax, and then of course your Infitec for Dolby.... and red/cyan anaglyph... and colourcode 3d.... and....

...oh, why bother....

My request:

Jim, I'm not sure how involved you are with Oakley these days, but (...)As far as known, Jim is not involved in Oakley business anymore... but the italian Luxottica Group, so that's where you should probably knock the door. You can take a look over here:
