After looking around nearly everywhere, I'm absolutely stumped as to where I can find a set of used 18-85 Zeiss Super Speed Mkll primes.

Does anyone know of a shop that has some in stock?

they are in high demand .. as you can see there is no supply ...
the 35mm adaptors for 2/3" ccd camera's took care of the supply ...the fall of the US $$ has caused price to go up 40% over past 4-5 years ...
now with 1000+ REDs reserved and at least 30-40% of those looking for lens = short supply = price is going to go UP on any sets that do get listed for sale ..
IMO anybody that list a place that has a set - figure at least 25-50 persons will call about the set ...
i've been looking since last June ... have come across standard zeiss T2.1's ..
even zeiss 16mm super speeds are hard to find ....

i would think that a lens manufacturer would see some opportunity here ?
also the SI2k camera uses a PL mount ... so who's going to step up and gives some prime lens that do not cost 16k each ?

visual products has had that set listed for months ( they didn't have a set june- nov but still had them listed) ....

Just a heads up, over the last year, just for our P+S Technik Mini35's, we've bought up every set we could find and that's not many - and we've paid top dollar for them. We may end up selling one of our sets in the next few weeks, but there really aren't any on the market right now.

T2.1's if you're lucky. Rarely, but a few T1.9's. Or, if you can afford 'em Cooke's and Master Prime's :)

Visual Products is a good company, but they don't have those T1.3's right now.

They might have the T1.9's but I've requested T1.3's from them many times with no response.

What are MII and MIII primes going for these days?

I don't see prices on any of the sites... not a good sign!

I have been hearing some silly numbers lately. Over on CML somebody was talking about his buddy who had a firm offer of $35K for a set of Mark1 Speeds, and was holding out for more :pinch:

I managed to scrape up $7K per lens to get a 25mil, 50mil and 85mil bastard set of Speeds in November of '07 - seemed like a lot at the time :detective2:

Considering the price of Master Primes, especially in US dollars, they are the only semi-affordable cine lenses that go to T1.3 so the Speeds are a hot item. Not to rub salt in the wound for those who cannot find them, but they look terrific on the RedOne. I love the character, texture and the organic feel of a lens from that era. It is also my belief that the lower contrast nature of the lens helps DR a bit.

The Speeds also are kinder to human faces than a tack sharp lens like an Ultra Prime - it is worth noting however, that in a perfect world I would shoot Ultras and soften to taste in post but on set it is a better vibe if the monitor out that everyone is gathered around shows the talent looking a little smoother. YMMV.

Silly doesn't even begin to describe most of the numbers out there right now. I know of several nice sets of speeds available and all these guys are sitting tight and holding out for more. I'm somewhat dumbfounded that Century/Schneider, Canon or others are not jumping all over this chance to release an affordable set of PL mount primes. It seems RED is the only company doing so and I've decided to just sit tight and wait to see what the RED primes give us. I can't get myself to pay $35~$40K for 20 year old glass that I could have bought for half that two years ago. I don't believe the claims of shortages either because I'm not having too much trouble finding the lenses I want to buy (except for an Arri LWZ-1)... I just can't find anyone willing to part with them for less than the cash value of a kidney. With prices at an inflated high, a lot of sellers are coming out of the woodwork lately and the only reason prices are holding is the sellers are sitting tight and there's enough desperate people who will pay the prices.

I agree. When a new set of Master Primes is around $100K, it doesn't seem logical to get almost half that price for such old designs. You are way better off investing in the new lenses and then renting them along with the camera as a package to recoup the money. I doubt anyone would want to rent the old SS lenses so you will probably only have them for personal use.

Maybe after the RED lenses come out the prices will fall back to reality.

What about just buying new ultra primes?

What's the price for new up's?

Depending on which ones and what package deal you may be able to arrange, you can get a nice set of 4 or 5 UPs for under $50K... IMO that makes more sense to me than spending $40K on a set of 20 year old MKII super speeds. But not in my budget right now, so I'll wait to see what RED gives us. For now I can still rent zeiss standards pretty cheap and I've got a few various lenses of my own anyway. RED is saying they'll have an 18, 25, 35, 50, 85 and 100 all at T1.9 with their 15mm and updated 300mm at T2.9. To me that seems worth waiting a bit longer before I buy Ultras and I can't justify buying MP's.

There are no new Ultra Primes. Zeiss-Arriflex stopped making them because of the Master Prime.
Has anyone is interested in a set of old Zeiss Arri standard mount primes? Putting a PL adapter will result great optic the problem is the housing which is very hard to pull focus. However price is accordingly.

Good luck trying to sell those for that price lol. I sold a freshly overhauled perfect condition FULL set (18,25,35,50,85) PL converted B-Speeds with 80mm fronts for 16K Euro 2 months ago and thought I got way more money for it than I should have, considering what I bought them for (7500 Euro). Your price for an incomplete set (less value) is not going to get you buyers. The B-Speeds have only a 2/3 turn focus scale and are much less value than MKII and III although optically very close but mechanically inferior. They also have a triangular iris that has an interesting/strange bookeh.

I know the lens market is out of control but it's not that out of control.

How would these Super Speeds compare to, say, a Canon 50mm f/1.2 L?

A lot of reviews I've seen say still lenses compare well with cine lenses, but I don't know. You can get most of the L-series primes for around $1,500 USD.

If the Canon still lenses work well on the Birger mount then we will have some great options ..... 24 f1.4, 35 f1.4, 50 f1.2, 85 f1.2, 135 f2 etc etc.. There are also the Zeiss Nikon mount lenses.

But until we can test them, who knows.

Ultra Primes are still available to order, I have quotes. Several lenses in the Ultra Prime family do not have a Master Prime to supplant them (8R, 10mm, 12mm, etc..) and are still in production.

Yeah, these Canon L-series lenses can be picked up for a song compared to the super speeds.

Absolutely not true. The UltraPrimes are still very much a current product. If you want them with LDS then it may be a bit of a wait as those are normally built to order with relatively few kept on the shelf in stock, but otherwise Arri still makes them and we sell them. I believe we even have access to some in stock right now. Yes they will cost you more than a set of used SuperSpeeds even at the current crazy prices of used glass, but not too much of a cost difference and a sizeable performance difference. Sometimes that one extra stop is not the most important part of the equation. The Ultras are excellent glass.
