View Full Version : Some basic questions about the RED

I am new to this forum, so there is a chance that someone may have posted similar questions already and I just didn’t see them. First of all, I am wondering about “ground glass” markings. Obviously there isn’t a real ground glass in the Red, but I’d like to know if the finder will contain an option to display the most common aspect ratios such as 1.78:1, 1.85:1, and 2.40:1, and if they can be output to a field monitor? In addition I am wondering if the switching from 4K to 2K to HD is accomplished by zooming into the Mysterium chip similar to switching some HDV cameras from HDV to SD? I am asking, because this would result a perceived change of lens focal length. Furthermore I’d like to know how much the various proposed drives can actually hold in minutes at 24fps in 4K, 2K and HD, and how many flash cards will fit into the proposed solid state recorders at one time? Finally I am wondering if the Red has indeed only one 12V output for accessories? Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer these questions!

not sure if this answers your question, but if you search "aspect ratio" a ton of posts come up.

Hi Joerg
First of all, welcome to the forum!
All your questions have definitely been answered in the forum already.
These sticky posts at the top of the Red One forum would be a good start:

Please do some more searching. If you still can't find the answers, then do feel free to ask again! :)

There will be markings but what sizes they'll be I don't know for sure yet!
I believe there is an option to both scan the chip full size at both 2k and 4k without cropping but also there also will be the option of zooming in to the chip to allow the use of 16mm lenses.
The RED-DRIVE will hold 2 hours (yes that's right!) of 24fps at 4k using
REDCODE.
Though most of your questions are answered, in far more detail than I've just given, elsewhere on the forum. Have a look round as there's some good points and advice floating around here.
