I have been following Bruce Allen's garage build monitor and thought to myself: "There has to be something decent out there." There's not. It seems that all of the pro-model monitors suck. Especially for the (It must be gold-plated and wrapped in diamonds) price.

Small LCDs (6"-11") in the 720p-1080p range, don't seem to exist in the consumer market.

Seiko-Epson state that they have created a 7" full hd 1080p LCD panel. I spent two days looking for any release info (past or future), to no avail. today I came upon this statement;

"NOTE: Please be aware that these modules are not available as standard products and are not for sale. SANYO EPSON supports customized products and high volumes only.

If you have any questions or inquiries, please contact us."

That leaves me out. I just want three. High volume can be very subjective.

I Know that the RED team is looking to develop the highest quality modular camera and peripherals in existence, and doing a fine job,(damn skippy). I also know that they are going to be making modular accessories for the future.

I just thought I would put a bug in someones ear. The technology is out there, and may be more available to you than it is to me.

A 7" full hd 1080p Monitor on board would be cool. As an optional accessory of course.(not looking for a free lunch, but thank you, I eat just fine.)

Also anyone think they could run a camera wearing one of these?

Built into an Oakley frame on one eye. This could put a new spin on the light weight viewfinder.

Gotcha. But mine has the same effective resolution :)

Just shot some 35mm adapter stuff with it today and having true 720P was AMAZING for focus.

I sold a panel to a guy in England and he has immediately asked me for another, first satisfied cutomer, yaay. But he is enterprising and has built his own case out of wood :) Ah, gotta finish that case design so people I sell panels to don't have to build their cases themselves though :(

Chuck, the Panasonic panel is only 800x480!!!

I wasn't Knocking your work Bruce. I think it's genius. I just found it hard to believe that there wasn't a good solution out there already. The closest thing I found is a 9.2" 16:9 pro-vision touchscreen monitor that claims to be 800x600 native. While this may work, I may end up being your third or fourth satisfied customer. Good luck.

Were you shooting on the hv20 again?

Didn't get that impression at all!

I think it's genius.

Well, rather than me being clever, I think it's just that the monitor manufacturers are being kinda stupid (or else they're waiting for everyone to buy 800x480 ones and then they plan to sell all of those people 720p ones a year down the line?)

Me too!

Don't like 800x480 (eg what 800x600 gets cropped to once you're doing 16:9). It's not high enough res.

Yes, with a SGpro, Nikon 17-35, 80-200, primes, etc... we had the $1500 Marshall as well but my monitor was crisper so we chose to use that instead, even though it didn't have a case yet. Marshall was definitely marginally brighter, though. Both of them are not useable in direct sunlight.

Allen, how much you charge for your LCD?

Bruce Allen

Bare panel and controller is $450 right now plus shipping. No long-term warranty. No guarantee it won't catch on fire. It's a hobbyist project.

Current case is coming and will be very nice but unfortunately very expensive. Am working on a cheaper case alternative. But until then, the final price for the finished package might be around $750 or so (with AC adapter, hot-shoe mount adapter, threads for Noga arm, etc), plus shipping. Hopefully less but I don't want to promise anything.

Again, this is a hobbyist project.

At least it's not pretending to be all slick and pro, when it's not.

Does anyone know its true resolution? They don't seem to say in their press release, which makes me a bit suspicious...

Bruce, I am really excited with your idea to built DIY HD focus LCD, awesome!
So as far as your product works and we can finally see if we are in focus, I really dont care about any design (web or case). Most of expensive pro products are ugly as hell nonetheless
